"What a thing it is to sit absolutely alone, in the forest, at night, cherished by this wonderful, unintelligible, perfectly innocent speech, the most comforting speech in the world, the talk that rain makes by itself all over the ridges, and the talk of the watercourses everywhere in the hollows! Nobody started it, nobody is going to stop it. It will talk as long as it wants, this rain. As long as it talks I am going to listen." -Thomas Merton

Liz-Self-Potrait-Journal Weekend reflection offered by guest contributor Liz Sorensen Wessel.

A week of scorching hot 100° weather, the last sun baked days of summer in southern California. The morning awoke to sounds of thunderous clouds, readying themselves to rush in like relief workers and ease the pain of Mother Earth’s dry parched skin. Oh, let the rain come, let it rain down in prayers to answer to our deepest need. Rain fall softly, teach us your hidden gift of surrender. You echo earth’s cries with compassion, offering us a nurturing response.

What is it about the rain that encourages us to slow down and savor life’s simple pleasures? As we linger without an agenda or a “to do” list we are naturally drawn into a more peaceful state. This morning I have lit candles to honor this sacred time to “rest in Thee.”

I recall that as children it was exhilarating to run outside barefoot in the rain without any cares. Today, for a fleeting moment, I felt childlike again and wanted to throw off my shoes and run free. Instead, I stepped outdoors and let the first big drops splash my face. Then, I stood under the protective eaves of our home and listened to nature’s outpouring cascade from the sky. I watched the torrents and wished they might also wash away all worries.

"Those sweet words we shared between us,
the vault of heaven has concealed in its heart.
One day they will pour down like
the rain and our secrets will
germinate in the soil of this universe. "

I wonder what it is like where you are today. What the Spirit might be gently whispering to you. I wish for you quiet moments of peacefulness and little things that delight your soul.

This is the most eloquent and moving piece, Liz. Thank you for sharing Merton’s words and then improving upon them.

Thanks for your beautiful images of the sun shining thru. I was at a friend’s house recently in Nevada. His home is high on hill, overlooking a beautiful valley. I was trying to figure out my way home to southern CA. It had rained during the night, and as we sat on his patio the next morning, he said, “Route 395 is right there..right where those rays are pointing, shining through the clouds.” If only life’s journey could always be so clear, with sun rays pointing the way.

Moments of peacefulness came to a group of us as we pilgrimed forth to the Benedictine Monastery in New Norcia, outside Perth in Western Australia. Peacefulness surrounded us in natural beauty, deep blue sky, wildflowers beginning to bloom, rolling paddocks of canola and the melodic chanting of the Community as we joined them for prayer. – No rain to freshen the delightful Spring day- still deep peace. As usual, Liz, thank you ever so much.

I love this. The peacefulness that one can find in God’s little gifts, like rain, presents opportune moments for reflection. It is in these moments where we can renew ourselves, and if we are having a difficult day, it is a means of wiping away the negative feelings held deeply in our hearts. I thoroughly enjoyed your imagery in describing yourself reacting to the rain’s beauty. Thank you so much for sharing this, Liz. It reminds me of every moment I take to stop and admire the beauty that exists in everything around us…from a moonlit sky filled with stars to rays of sunlight peeking from the clouds (especially in morning’s cool air). I especially enjoy moments of silence, when all I can hear is myself breathing, encouraging positive thoughts.

Thank you for the well wishes Liz… quiet moments of peacefulness goes hand in hand with little things that delight our souls. —- Gentle rhythm of the rain accompany me as I lay down to sleep. Calm the loud thoughts running in my head after a night at work. Too much to do in too little time to spare brings my whole being into a rattling stare. In exchange of the joy and love that we give and take in that sacred place bringing healing to one and all is just in pace. Your soothing sound and cool refreshing touch oh gentle rain… reminds me of my carefree days, younger age when I did ran wild under you, pouring, roaring, then, into my parents sweet embrace. Your echoes of compassion so clear and near.

Go for someone who makes you smile because it takes only a smile to make a dark day seem bright.
