The greatest passion of my dear friend Diana Gallaher is justice. She has campaigned for and served the poor and vulnerable all of her life and she is a gift of light in this world.

When we met recently, we spoke of our worries about passing too harsh a judgment on those who see the world differently than do we. Diana reminded me of the oft-quoted (but never lived enough) passage from Micah 6:8. I offer it today for your reflection, meditation and, perhaps, as something for your prayers.

"He has told you, O mortal, what is good:  and what does the Lord require of you but to do justice, and to love kindness, and to walk humbly with your God?"

How hard it is to "walk humbly" (as does Diana) in the presence of those with whom we disagree or who behave in ways we find offensive to our notion of beauty. How challenging it is to live Love as we travel the many tortuous paths of this earth.

In the context of the writing, people at that time, as we do now, try to impress god with what we can do, or what we can bring to the table. I have enjoyed “The Message” as a modern version/translation of the scriptures. See below.
“But he’s already made it plain how to live, what to do,what God is looking for in men and women.
It’s quite simple: Do what is fair and just to your neighbor, be compassionate and loyal in your love, And don’t take yourself too seriously—take God seriously.”
Walking humbly with god, taking ourselves out of the way and living love. The New Covenant – written in the Old Testament times.

Whoa, Erie. I did not expect the Journal meditatation to offer me as an example of walking humbly with God. I wish I were such an example. But I am thankful that at least I seek to be. I pray that the journey of my life is to do justice, love kindness and walk humbly with God. I am convinced that you cannot separate love from justice and it is wise to be mindful that for now we see through a glass darkly whenever I think I get it and others don’t.
Thank you for the love and affirmation of my attempts to live a vocation.

It is an awful feeling to be judged, rejected, exposed, unloved, to feel unworthy. Ah, but what a worthy prayer and a path to walk; humbly with our God. God help me, please…
Thanks for sharing the New Covenant, Karen…
Diana, I can not think of anyone more deserving…

Walking humbly… our spirits have learned… though our flesh could be weak in times when it feels attacked, we could remind ourselves, remind our kids, “Love does not abuse, it gently demonstrates what it has found and holds the space for others to find the gift”.
