Julie ross ryder bw close   Preparing for a biathlon with my track star daughter in 1988 I visited my doctor for a physical. Months of training had put me in good shape. I awaited my doctor's affirmation

"How did I do?" I asked.

"Well," he said blandly, "I couldn't find anything wrong."

Doctors are trained to diagnose problems and often forget to celebrate their patient's health. I once asked a group of radiologists to review a strategic plan. Taught to find spots on the lung they could only see what was "wrong" with the plan by knit-picking sentences.

Maybe this happens to you. There is nothing "wrong" with the baby in the photo. Not long into his life his loving parents will naturally start pointing out issues. Obviously, it is necessary to warn him not to touch hot things. But, as he grows into childhood successful parenting will "catch" him doing what is right rather than wrong.

As you consider your life start with a diagnosis of what is right with you. If you list all the mistakes you do not want to make this year you have written a prescription for failure. Focus on your strengths and your weakness will naturally fade.

One member of the dietary staff at Baptist Hospital told me years ago that her path to successful dieting was through "Want" power. "Put your energy on what you want and you won't need so much will power," she advised me.

Where attention goes, energy flows. Concentrate now and every day on love's energy. Love will open your finest gifts.

Funny, but I never knew my paternal grandparents in this life, yet on some level I have known them and they live and breathe in me. I have experienced their essence through my encounters with my father; some very loving, others not so forgiving. We never know how something we say or do may impact another soul. So much has to do with the meaning we attach to the experience.
Noticing and focusing on what is right is a marvelous concept that requires a reversal of thought. Yet, isn’t that what the miracle of love calls us to remember? Thank you Erie, for the energy you pour into raising our awareness, which is a beautiful gift to receive.

These past days, I may say Love has opened the finest gift my brother has left for me. Gabriel, his son responds positively as I focus on love’s energy, the power that can move mountains has touched his hidden heart. He smiles, listens and tend to become more mature… loving in his own way… I welcome whatever comes, challenges, and more challenges. May my brother’s soul rest and rejoice in peace.
    Thank you Erie.

I recall some advice I recieved after seeing everything as wrong. It is this: “There are two kinds of people in the world, one can overlook ten good things and find one bad, the other can over look ten bad things and find one good!” That one hit home for me.

As we course through life we encounter many kinds of people, some will encourage us and some are highly critical of us. We may be discouraged for a while but when we focus on the goal of what we want and what we need to achieve we can once again light the lamp within us and the oil in our lamp will keep us burning. “Give me oil in my lamp keep me burning, give me oil in my lamp today. To the spirit keep me turning, keep me turning, turning all the way.” “Love will open our finest gifts.

Point well taken! Plus, many times what you believe is your weakness, such as my high sensitivity to others’ opinions, which helped make me a strong career counselor! Yes, even a weakness can become a strength, if you “flip it” to a positive.
But certainly, always begin with your God given special attributes, skills, and personality: look for good aspects and your life will a fuller, more successful one, guaranteed!

Impacting another soul is serious business! It does, though, happen regularly, and often with little acknowledgement by all of us. Often just a smile we give at the grocery store brings another some hope, and when we honor long time friendships with our attention, time, and caring– we create pockets of wellbeing, with results far beyond our knowing!
