Rest 1 - erie chapman

Sleep rounds the edges of our days if we are lucky enough to hold her hand until dawn.

Sleep gives us what we so desperately need – a chance to rest from the weight of caregiving. Each night, we seek to be cradled in her precious lap until the morning light wakes us to celebrate the day.

     Yet, she can elude us.

How often have you awakened at 2:00 a.m. and struggled to return to her kind embrace? But, a clatter of worries destroys your peace. Suddenly, you cannot find your path back to her rounded world.

Sleep is so important that we take drugs to find her if she does not come voluntarily.

E.H. Chapin captured her value: "What a blessing man acknowledges in sleep, whose soft oblivion makes an island of every day, and breaks the hold of continuous care; that cools the hot brain, and bathes the weary eye-lids, and lets the buffeted and foundering heart cast anchor every night in some harbor of happy dreams."

There is an elegant truth in sleep, an innocence on our faces when she comes to disarm us. In her presence, we abandon our defenses. Is there anything more precious than the look of a child caught in her arms?

Sleep is a truth dance. Isadora Duncan wrote "I have something very pure, a totally white thought…I would like to no longer dance to anything but the rhythm of my soul."

What is the rhythm of your soul? Listen for it tonight when your soul lives as honestly as it can. Sleep knows no pretension.

Jesus said, “Come to me, all of you who are weary and carry heavy burdens, and I will give you rest." Honor sleep and she will enrich your love.

Beautiful piece, Erie. Certainly, surrendering to God is a crucial step in being able to sleep peacefully. As a former caregiver, I can say that isn’t always easy. So much is already out of your control that it’s difficult to feel all control slipping from your hands, and mind, even if the control is going to such an almighty and trustworthy keeper. Still, I can’t help thinking that sometimes He doesn’t bring peaceful slumber to us so we can find the answers we need to persevere–just my thoughts after much prayer and study.
    Thanks again for the post,
    Bobbye

How enchanting to weave sleep’s embrace in the sweet dream form of a woman. Your artistic interlacing of shadow and light, form and prose is stunning, Erie. Isadora Duncan’s words; a lovely revelation…
Sleep can be restorative and her symbolism intriguing and deeply spiritual. ”Come, and I will give you rest”. If we trust enough to listen and allow that still clear voice to guide us we will know Her peace.

So beautiful and captivating. Thank you, Erie. It does seem as if sleep beckons for us to lay down our burdens and trust.

Thank you Erie for reminding us that time and again we need sleep not only it does healing to our body but also rest to our soul “come to me that are heavy laden and I will give you rest”. There are many things and situations that demand our attention e.g. as caregivers or our trying to fit our lives with so many activities doing things or time spent gaining material goods. Lao Tze also reminds us that the number one priority in our life is our relationship with the Source of Being and we will automatically discontinue demanding more of anything else. We begin to emulate the Tao effortlessly, living heaven on earth.

Sleep heals the body and cleanses the mind. I often take it for granted or swap it to accomplish more things. No matter how much I forego it, it eventually catches up. It signals our bodies and our minds to care for ourselves. It is our natural instinct to find rest and rejuvenate so we can go on and care for others.
