Orange Street FairNote: Guest reflection by Woody Wessel

Well summer is coming to an end. Labor Day approaches   school has or is about to start again.

You may wonder what to do on that last real weekend of the summer?

In the City of Orange the people came up with an Idea about forty five years ago, of having a street fair for three days in the middle of old town around the plaza .  I believe they thought it would bring in people to the downtown area eat at restaurants and of course shop.  The theme of the fair was a national one (since it was started about the time of the bicentennial).  The fair combines many the different cultures that make up not only Orange, but America as a whole.

For three days you can wander the downtown area and eat food and listen to music from many of the different cultures that Musicians at the fair
help make up this country.

In this small way the City of Orange helps remind us that we all came from many different places near and far.

Yet we are all Americans, whether your people came from Ireland,  China or anywhere else in the wide world.

We all enjoy the same rights.  All are equal under our laws. We have no kings no lords, or permanent ruling class.

In this county there is only one aristocracy.  That of the mind. One can go as far as their will and drive can take them.

Look at President Obama or Bill Gates in our time. Before them there were many others, too many to count.

So take some time this upcoming Labor Day weekend and come to the street fair and remember in this

country out of many; one.

Excellent article Woody. I love to wander around downtown Orange, look around at the antique stores and have lunch with my friends. Definitely a place to relax and enjoy oneself with friends.

Your reflection is a great example of a community coming together to celebrate unity amid diversity, which I imagine will happen in various ways throughout our great country. I appreciate too, your closing comment Woody, “Remember in this country out of many; one.” Thank you!
For me, it helps to remember that although we had slavery, we also had the abolitionist movement. Although their have been many injustices, each generation has risen to meet the challenges, The civil rights movement, the suffragettes helped women gain the right to vote…now our generation must work to ensure that our freedoms are preserved. We too must stand and protect our treasures.

The Orange Circle is like a mandala to the world. Its spokes reach out in every direction and makes connections that encircle and embrace. As the roads come back to home they bring parts of the world with it. A bit of Italy and Spain, Mexico and Germany, Zaire to Australia. The largeness of the world is but a neighborhood in Orange next weekend. Come out and meet your neighbors.
P.S. I am known to be fond of a Guinness. Nice smile Woody!

Thanks so much for your contribution, Woody, and I love the cheerful picture of you – a reflection of positive energy! “In this county there is only one aristocracy. That of the mind. One can go as far as their will and drive can take them.” This a terrific trio of sentences.
