On my way to retrieve the morning paper I discovered different news. It is suggested, but not portrayed, in the accompanying video shot by one quicker with his camera then was I.

The news I heard was shouted by a solo reporter speaking with practiced authority. But I saw nothing. He spoke again, reporting the imminent arrival of a great show.

Beauty & grace are a fine duet. Their appearance is especially pleasing when they dance on stage unexpected.

The reporter & his entire troop suddenly appeared not twenty feet above me. Ten geese, five on each side, displaying that thrilling V we view with awe.

Leaders love to cite the geese formation as a metaphor for teamwork. What struck me this morning was that only one goose, the temporary guide, was honking.

There are hundreds of lessons that can be gleaned from the gorgeous phenomenon of geese in flight. Yet, the most important one appears in three lines from Mary Oliver's poem, "Where Does the Temple Begin, Where Does It End?"

"There are things you can't reach. But/you can reach out to them, and all day long./The wind, the bird flying away. The idea of God."

Temples begin & end everywhere – especially in the sky.

Just beautiful! I immediately thought of birding at Mt. Auburn Cemetery, near Boston, where I head each spring to find; watch; and talk about the heavenly beauty of warblers, who stop there while flying north for the good weather. My friends and I, literally “reach out to them–the wind, the bird flying away, the idea of God!
Birds remind us of our deepest longings: to be free from Earth’s restraints; to move through our days, with humility and grace, and most of all: they carry God’s message that yes indeed, all is right with our world!

What a magnificent comment, Terry. One of my favorites you have posted. Thank you for “reaching out” and for noting how birds evoke “our deepest longings.”

What eloquent prose and a creative play on words. Absolutely delightful and uplifting, Erie! As we raise our eyes to the awe and wonder of a grace-filled moment, we catch glimpses of the divine if we pause to take it all in.
I guess if every experience was endless we might take it/or people in our lives for granted. Yet, we are aware..

I was at a convention in downtown Nashville on Friday and saw hundreds of birds in formation flying circles around the bat building. We were in awe. Wish I would have read this journal post prior to seeing that. I would have thought more deeply about the “show” and would have thought to capture it on video.
    Thanks for sharing Erie!

Interesting thought that causes me to reflect deeply on the beauty of God’s creation and the meaning behind these inspiring moments. What does God have to teach us through them? There has to be amazing trust to follow the leader and courage for that leader fall back at just the right time, letting another lead to keep us moving forward. Not only, as Terry notes in his comment above does this remind us of the importance of “being free” and “moving through our days with humility and grace” but when we move together in harmony with mutual respect and support we are empowered to serve God’s purpose for our life, something that cannot be done alone.
