Summer Garden August 2018
Leaves and Blossoms Along the Way: A Poem by Mary Oliver

If you’re John Muir you want trees to
live among. If you’re Emily, a garden
will do.

Try to find the right place for yourself.
If you can’t find it, at least dream of it.

When one is alone and lonely, the body
gladly lingers in the wind or the rain,
or splashes into the cold river, or
pushes through the ice-crusted snow.
Anything that touches.

God, or the gods, are invisible, quite
understandable. But holiness is visible,
entirely.

Some words will never leave God’s mouth,
no matter how hard you listen.

In all the works of Beethoven, you will
not find a single lie.

All-important ideas must include the trees,
the mountains, and the rivers.

To understand many things, you must reach out
of your own condition.

For how many years did I wander slowly
through the forest. What wonder and
glory I would have missed had I ever been
in a hurry!

Beauty can both shout and whisper, and still
it explains nothing.

The point is, you’re you, and that’s for keeps.

This poem is excerpted from Mary Oliver’s latest collection of poetry, Felicity, published by Penguin Press in October, 2015.

Your painting is holiness, Liz. Thank you.

i was struck by that line as well, Erie and most especially by your affirming comment. Thank YOU
The one line in Oliver’s poem that I struggle with is “Beauty can both shout and whisper, and still it explains nothing.”
The quote “Beauty for Beauty’s sake” comes to mind as a meaningful purpose to me to find Beauty in every situation or rather God or Love no matter how trying the circumstanses. I guess I am coming at it from a different angle but Oliver’s ending line pairs with it in such a lovely way…

How wonderful your beauty-full painting captures the essence of this delightful poem, Liz. It draws me into stillness, with hope and an openness of what will be revealed. Thank you.

It is amazing how we all perceive things differently. With this “Poem” by Mary Oliver, I do not see a poem. I see a collection of random shower thoughts. Little items of thought that seem important and sometimes profound. I read it as a string of thoughts not connected. But of course one’s mind tends to connect the dots (or phrases).
Take the line about “Beauty can both shout and whisper, and still it explains nothing.” Take the view of nature with it’s loud waterfalls and whispering streams. Or the orchestra of thunder and lightning followed by a gentle rain on the leaves of an oak tree.
That tree that falls in the forest. Are we distant or are we closer…
Thank you for your exquisite artwork, Liz.

Thank you Maureen, there is hope with every new day, isn’t there. Each sunrise offers a new view and encourages us to begin anew.
