Compassion 2-13-2019 2

“If your compassion does not include yourself, it is incomplete."

-Jack Kornfield

As caregivers, we are very good at caring for others but when it comes to self-care; not always.

Perhaps it is because we allow our reserves to get too low.

In healthcare, change, redesign, and  innovation are occurring at lightening speed. Technology offers incredible opportunities and requires continuous learning and adapting to new systems. Yet, for those providing care, burnout has never been higher.

We all have an internal teacher but we may not experience enough quiet time to tune in, listen and receive guidance.

Resilience is an innate human quality; our life force naturally turns toward the sun. Our Spirits see beyond circumstances to the Love th holds us and our universe together.

May compassion be our companion through the many seasons of our lives.

The uncared for caregiver is an all too common situation in today’s challenging times. Stop! Take your own pulse! Jot down what your hobbies and deep interests are beyond your formal or informal caregiving role. It could indeed save your life!
Long ago I promised myself I would always work to live and never live to work. I pursued many hobbies including golf, fishing, fly tying, family research and cooking just to name a very few. Yes I worked hard as a teacher, life coach, parent, and manager but I kept physically active and well aware of “sound mind in sound body” and I would prefer sound spirit, mind and body!

It was only when I took the time to look deeply into your watercolor, Liz, that I noticed the bird. How symbolic that is for me in relation to your invitation to pause and be compassionate towards myself so that I can be compassionate to those who travel my life’s journey with me. Self care in whatever way we are nourished are gifts not only for ourselves but for others. Thank you Liz for the compassion that you share.

Liz. Am so very impressed with your innovative watercolor and your willingness to break new ground with your art. As Sister mentioned, the bird is brilliantly camouflaged in his natural color on the window sill. It is such a beautiful and moving piece.
“May compassion be our companion…” is a wonderful reminder and a fine way to remember the need to start with compassion for ourselves. Thank you!
