Kindness-Mark TwainWhen I reflect on what I would like to share with you, I recognize the importance of acknowledging some of the strain and difficulties that so many people are experiencing, as well as all of creation. There is so much suffering in this world. As we give witness to the strife, the polarities in perception between right and wrong, love and fear, what’s mine or yours to bear, we confront the best and worst in ourselves. The progressive reoccurring disasters and accompanying devastation globally is at a critical tipping point. Mother Earth is strained beyond capacity as she struggles to retain her grace and equilibrium. She is calling, calling out to us with an anguished plea to awaken. Will we heed the call?

As these troubling thoughts swirl in upon me, the soothing voice of Paul McCarty visits my thoughts, offering instead a sense of calm peacefulness;

When I find myself in times of trouble, Mother Mary comes to me/Speaking words of wisdom, let it be.”

“For though they may be parted, there is still a chance that they will see / There will be an answer, let it be / And when the night is cloudy there is still a light that shines on me / Shine until tomorrow, let it be…”

“I wake up to the sound of music / Mother Mary comes to me / Speaking words of wisdom, let it be / Whisper words of wisdom, let it be… “

As I sit here in the quiet hush of morning, the neighborhood rooster heralds day breaks arrival, the sun shines blessings, wind chimes stir softly, a mama bird busily flits back and forth bringing nourishment to her nestled fledglings. All messengers of life’s ability to hold what is here and to begin anew with unceasing hopefulness in a field of boundless love.

The vast complexities of this world and our lack of control can feel overwhelming, yet there is one thing we can offer in this moment; kindness.  Perhaps a thought, a prayer, a smile, a gesture of thoughtfulness, an unconditional act of kindness for someone, or even for ourselves.  A spiritual principle shares this wisdom, “there is no order of difficulty in miracles. One is not harder or bigger than another. They are all the same. All expressions of love are maximal” (A course in Miracles).

Even the smallest act of kindness is maximal. Notice how kindness manifests in your heart …throughout your day… guiding your every step… informing your life… gifting you…gifting others, encouraging you to choose love over fear and in this way bring healing to a hurting world.

“Act with justice, love with kindness and walk humbly with your God.” Micah 6:8

    Kindness/Gratitude
    Singer/Songwriter Amanda Palmer started doing performance art as “The Eight Foot Bride” (a living statue). Staying still, holding flowers as people came by, some would watch. Sometimes they would drop money into the basket near her feet. She would slowly turn and offer a flower. For some that had watched her over the course of the day, their eyes would connect during the exchange. They got it. There was kindness expressed in their eyes. An appreciation. Kindness and gratitude would fill Amanda’s heart.

    With gratitude towards your kindness, Liz and Erie, thank you.

    Your description of your early morning experience draws me into that space where Life is at its natural best, Liz. Absolute Beauty, expressed in care, kindness, providing; all done as part of the day’s routine. May I be encouraged by your words and surrender to the gifts and wonder of each precious day. May your day be blessed also Liz.

    Jolyon, thank you for sharing such a beautiful story of Amanda’s Palmer’s art. Your expression reminds me of this, “The ark of peace is entered two by tow.” (ACIM) Everything happens in relationship…

    Thank you, Liz. Yes, “there is one thing we can offer in this moment; kindness.” And, in addition, what you mentioned further down – specific actions to express that kindness. Some wait to receive kindness and become distraught and resentful when it does not come in the way they wished. YOU are one who lives love so well because you initiate kindness and continue to offer it whether or not it is reciprocated. THANK YOU forever for that, Liz.

    Perhaps my favorite JSW post you have ever created! Kindness emanates from hearts that can overcome self concerns whenever someone else needs comforting for any reason. For me, a smile or a wink, have always picked up my spirits and therefore I tend to wink more than I should but I think I have the smiling down to an art!
    Whether the receiver of the kind act is simply lonely or dejected or overwhelmed with life’s challenges which never end; reaching out is a God-driven act which takes only the sincere intention to acknowledge another being and when you do, your sense of well being is also boosted!

    Thanks so much, Terry. Funny but I am a winker too! Yet, it just dawned on my that my winks has all but disappeared in this COVID time of sheltering in. 😦 Perhaps replaced with more phone calls to check in with people… 🙂
    I truly appreciate your smiles and words of encouragement and your kindness and the sincere intention with which you so generously offer it!
