Crisis-Opportunity
Charles Dickens, in a Tale of Two Cities said, “It was the worst of times; it was the best of times”. Perhaps we are now living in a similar epoch as the virus, political upheaval, unemployment, and the environment crumbling before our eyes, threaten all of us in trying to live a “normal” life on planet Earth.

The Asian symbol for opportunity is also the same symbol for crisis!  We can live more fully as human beings and caregivers, knowing that we will always be challenged by life conditions that cause suffering but offer opportunities for our souls to rise above the pain and strife to help others and our planet to survive and thrive!

When I had a Depression several years ago, and began a long healing process, I realized I was thankful for modern medical care, my family caregivers and the wonderfully restorative support from many friends, some of whom, I did not know that well!  Then I regained my enthusiasm for reading, music, outdoor adventures, and social interactions that fulfill my life today. But how easy it is to forget our blessings when times are tough and we are not sure where our lives will lead us.

Today, right now, make a list showing all the possibilities you face ahead; then for each hardship, think of a positive opportunity you might derive from that situation. Do this regularly and you will know your life is good in ways you had not thought of before!

Good morning Terry and thank you for sharing this reflection. What resonates with me is the recognition that life is a both and…moments of joy and sorrow, ease and struggle and holding s sacred space to acknowledge suffering with the utmost gentle and kind heart for myself and others… I am taking less for granted and appreciate small acts of kindness… how the suns shines on everyone and not just a select few.

Thank you Terry, not only for your encouragement but also for sharing your personal story. So, so true how crisis and opportunity balance one another – may we trust that and strive to live our lives seeking the wisdom that is offered to us in the possibilities that come our way.

It is hard to stay in balance, especially lately. I commend you and all of us that strive to recognize that imbalance is not natural. Live with Hope.
Your grief for what you have lost lifts a mirror
up to where you are bravely working.
Expecting the worst, you look, and instead,
here is the joyful face you have been wanting to see.
Your hand opens and closes, opens and closes.
If it were always a fist or always stretched open, you would be paralized.
Your deepest presence is in every small contracting and expanding,
the two as beautifully balanced and coordinated as birds’ wings. ~ Rumi

What a marvelous reflection with a perfect message, Terry. Even though we know this truth we forget it so often – and you are right that in the middle of trouble it is hard to think of any setback as an opportunity. Your strength in the face of adversity and your perpetually positive outlook are such a terrific example for us all. Thank you for this.
