“Your task is not to seek love, but merely to seek and find all the barriers within yourself that you have built against it.”    ҉    Rumi

SunsetB052009 Ah, there are so many ways that one’s heart opens and shuts as quickly as a camera lens. The barriers we raise in self-protection. They can become so subtle and automatic that we may not even notice our behaviors.  I think our hearts are a lot more fragile than we are willing to admit. How often do we close ourselves off from giving and receiving Love and to fully engaging life?

I am at a crossroads in life. It’s as though a big chapter has ended but I have not yet turned the page to begin a new one.  This in between space and emptiness is as uncomfortable as wearing a dress two sizes to small.  Yet, I know it is important to take a little time to honor this life transition and go within to listen deeply, reverently. It is not too often that I am willing to dip beneath the surface and encounter my vulnerabilities  in a kind, non-judging way.   To acknowledge my fear and the barriers I have built up through the years. This is a time of letting go of some things to precious to speak and of old worn out habits that are no longer useful or life giving.

As difficult as it may seem to overcome ambivalence and resistance to change, a simple beginning is to focus on a renewing source of life, our breath.   To breathe in our fears and to breathe out love.  In this way, with each new breath we can begin to Love again.

I am grateful to Candace Nagle for sharing the following poem with me, which I now gladly share with you.

 “Wage Peace”

Wage peace with your breath.
Breathe in firemen and rubble,
breathe out whole buildings
and flocks of redwing blackbirds.

Breathe in terrorists and breathe out sleeping children
and freshly mown fields.
Breathe in confusion and breathe out maple trees.
Breathe in the fallen
and breathe out lifelong friendships intact.

Wage peace with your listening:
hearing sirens, pray loud.
Remember your tools:
flower seeds, clothes pins, clean rivers.

Make soup.
Play music, learn the word for thank you in three languages.
Learn to knit, and make a hat.
Think of chaos as dancing raspberries,
imagine grief as the outbreath of beauty
or the gesture of fish.
Swim for the other side.
Wage peace.

Never has the world seemed so fresh and precious.
have a cup of tea and rejoice.
Act as if armistice has already arrived.
Celebrate today.

Thank you for sharing your beautiful painting, writing, and opening to love. I’m with you in this scary space called “transistion”, my friend.

Liz, Thanks for sharing this poem and your feelings about that crossroads place. Taking time to read it slowly again, two lines from the poem captured me completely. The first was “wage peace with your listening”. It made me think of all the times I was too busy planning my own agenda with a patient to truly hear their concerns. I want to do less of that and more of genuinely opening my self to the moment and the precious being who is sharing.
The second was “Think of chaos as dancing raspberries.” Well, that is excellent! So often the feeling of chaos that comes in the midst of change feels so ominous and threatening. But there is nothing threatening about dancing raspberries…A place of endings/beginnings can become a place of possibility, hope, excitement…a place of new options…even of whimsy and delight! So often in our personal and public lives, change is just winding down only to rev up again…always in some sort of flux…It seems a good practice to focus on possibilities with an open heart instead of living in fear of the unknown (love/fear once again). And often it is the unpredictable element that comes in to heal the moment.
To conclude…According to the Scarecrow, all yellow brick roads may lead to Oz. So, let’s travel together. May I suggest this song for the day? “Young at Heart” by Frank Sinatra. And the word for the day?….WHIMSY!

This is so deep and awe inspiring Liz!!!Thank you for bringing back something from the past.I took many meditation classes in the past and none of them is as touching as the poem. Your watercolor is beautiful and there is much more to it than meets the eye. It will take a little more study for me to find out what it is. May God Bless You today!!!

On the in-breath of beauty came your painting. On the out-breath, joy.

Ah crossroads, how many times have I found my self in that same spot! Crossroads can be an exciting in-between phase because there are so many possibilities to explore as well as a cause of unease because our life is pulling us out of the our “comfort zone” into the unknown.
The first step is to recognize when we are at a crossroads, which you have! When we have that consciousness, the rest will flow. Give your self all the time you need “in-between” so that your path is clear, but most of all let go of the past with love and embrace the new with love.
I have with much gratitude just crossed into a new era of living–my future potential is before me, love carries me in all that I do, my creative soul is poised for freedom of expression at long last and as I “wage peace” in my own life, that energy is reflected all around me to the world.
Thank you Liz, for your wonderful insights that also led me to reflect and the absolutely lovely watercolor–sunrise/sunset–embrace the change a crossroads brings to you!

Thank you Liz for the gentle reminder… Waging peace as I breathe in and out… For the beauty and joy each one brings into our lives I am fully grateful… As I imagine a chaotic reality I’m in… comes the dancing raspberries baby light rubies sparkling tasty when savored for a healthy nutritious gift for my precious little me. 🙂
