“All you can ever achieve is a sense of your soul. You gain little glimpses of its light, colors, and contours. You feel the inspiration of its possibilities and the wonder of its mysteries.”–John O’Donohue

Undefined Reflection by ~liz Sorensen Wessel

The luxury of sleeping in on a Saturday morning can seem quite delicious to most, especially for caregivers after a long week of toil. Yet, I find something so warm and inviting about rising in the early morning to keep company with such a hospitable friend.

In the quiet hush, before day awakens, time seems suspended. As the primordial darkness hovers, on the slate, as black as night, all is unwritten. Thoughts begin to form as shimmering stars. The newness of clay undefined, without shape, receptive to your hands, hopeful that you might discover the shape of your dreams and your one true gift.

I recently watched a video featuring the late, John O’Donohue. He shared a unique concept that I had never considered. He said, “Each of us has a huge pre-life that we have before we ever show up physically on this planet. Hundreds of thousands of years of imaginations and dreaming at the divine level went into the creation of the masterpiece that is each individual.”

Each one of us, with one irreplaceable time of "being" in this world.

The pre-dawn invites us into an in-between space of calm, one that reveals a threshold to remembering. What clues might you uncover in the stillness before all the "doing" must begin?

A time of expansiveness and exploration to touch upon your soul’s Beauty, to greet the One who longs to be seen. In the quiet, She will enter in.

Of course, there are may ways to experience the sacredness of a moment.

When day breaks and you return to the world of caregiving,  may those who are in need of your healing touch feel the miracle of your Love.

Meeting the early morning, in-between space of calm – how beautifully written! Liz, I walked with you in feeling the possible gift of staying in bed this morning, until I saw the sun bathe my room. I quietly got up, making bargains with what I needed to do vs. what I wanted (or not) to do. This is my favorite gift to myself, an undisturbed “palette” of time to create or not by appreciating that I only had me to answer to.
It was good while it lasted…

Liz when I read your quote from John O’Donohue about our life before we were on earth I recalled a talk I heard by Henri Nouwen on the evening of Palm Sunday in 1995. He was launching the book of a friend who was writing of his experience about his daughter who lived for three hours. What I recall Henri saying is that we existed for all eternity and for a very short time we are placed on earth to be able to say back to God with our life, “I love you”. Whatever time it is, it is sufficient to be able to live our truth and then we return to continue Life for eternity. Thanks for sharing your precious moments in the predawn awakenings.

I can’t sleep. The cats and my grand daughter are dreaming and peaceful. The night is cool and quiet. The bright moon is hidden in the fog. This moment is bliss. Sacred Time.

Liz, Thank you for raising up our awareness of our time before this life – and suggesting that time to come afterwards.
Thank you also for the gift of your mystical watercolor and all it suggests about our soul’s unfolding.
It’s interesting to me that people often refer to death as a time when we fall into eternity. In fact, aren’t we living in eternity already?
Maureen, thank you for your reference to Nouwen’s insights. I completely agree that this body is just one of the many types of consciousness we will have amid eternity.

You’ve captured the depth of potential that each morning offers us so beautifully Liz. It is also my favorite time of day. Lately, full moon and lunar eclipse seemed to have rendered sleeping patterns askew for many of us. I’ve been waking in the wee hours with the moon’s light spilling in the window, and staying wide awake for hours before falling back into a dream filled sleep of the weird variety. Another wave of cosmic love energy is flowing in and we are just adjusting to the changes…..preparing us for a new age, like the dawning of another day.
I like the Native American tradition of “singing the sun up” by a designated tribal member with prayers for their people and in honor of the creator and all of nature so that they may move in wisdom and be provided for. I’ve adopted this on my way to work as I am driving along while the sun is just peaking over the hills and I find that for me it serves as a foundation for whatever unfolds.
