DSC02820Recently, my husband, Woody and I enjoyed a weekend in Northern California. I awoke early Saturday morning to the sound of rain falling from a steel grey sky. When the sun broke through we went for a walk in Armstrong woods. The moss blanketed the forest green, the mist filled in every barren crevice, the soul of the forest rose up in human form out of ancient fallen redwoods, my feet sank down in soggy pine beds, crystal raindrops lit up bare tree branches with her favorite diamonds; so magical.

Have you ever thought about how your spirit might manifest in nature? Water is quite appealing to me as it is the essence of life. Water forms tributaries within our bodies carrying nutrients to each cell. Our first experience is to be bathed, gently rocked and held safely in the sea of our mother’s womb.

Water is a powerful life force that can unleash tremendous strength as seen in the crashing of ocean waves or with the slow patience of molding stone. Water creates opportunities for intimacy, playfulness and nurturance.

Although I am drawn to the freedom or water, I imagine myself manifesting in nature as a tree. I would root next to a vibrant river or maybe the sea; a big shade tree offering a calming presence.

Sometimes I feel like retreating back into the forest to look for fairies with skirts of leaves and flower hats. It was a rainy week in Southern California and where ever you are chances are it has been a busy week. I hope sunshine lures you outdoors to experience the wonders of the day.

There actually are fairies who live in the old hollowed out Redwoods at Armstrong Grove. I have seen them with my own eyes. If you look out of the eyes in the back of your head you will find them following you. They duck behind ferns and sit high above in Redwood branches. I have never spoken with one or touched them but their presence cannot be denied. You can feel it in the quiet still sacredness of that place.
Your painting is springtime magic! It is light and warmth and possibility. I can feel from it the joyousness blossoming of life and I want to reach right in to pluck one of those blackberries. Today in N. California the sunshine is bright, sky cleared of the heavy rain clouds that have been hounding us all week. I can hear the birds singing. It is time to go to go for a walk, smell the flowers, and look for fairies.

Absolutely delightful Liz – felt as though I was there with you, enjoying the wonder and the magic of it all. What a vibrant and contemplative painting for all of us as well as your graced granddaughter, Rejeanne. Thank you. May the Fairies draw you ever deeper into the wonder of Life and Living.

Candace and Liz, they are also in Hendy Woods, a virgin forest near where I live and I’ve heard some amazing tales from people who have seen not only fairies but elves! You both have an open invite to come out for a day to Hendy woods and see what kind of an adventure we will experience!
This is such a lovely piece Liz and so important now to send love to Mother Earth’s center and reconnect with all of nature. What a lovely gift for your granddaughter! It makes me miss the New England woods, which are so lovely in the spring and rather different than woods here in CA.
I relate more to Earth out of all the elements, and I think that reflects in my paintings and my home. Thank you for the wonderful visualizations of your writing—I drifted right into the woods!
