What would we do without the strength our deepest friends bring to us. How can we give care to others without a knowing that our loved ones will come to us when our hearts are torn?

Dearest Friends

My dearest friends stand rugged as chimneys.

Their fires know mine.

They have listened to the rhythms of my quaking heart.

They have raged at my enemies until they retreat.

Once again their ragged skins touch mine.

Once again they polish my heart.

Now my lies are burned away.

Now I come to you scorched, cleaned, true.

Piercingly beautiful, Erie. When all superfluous burns away, what remains? I cannot think of anything more precious than the love of someone who cares for us.
