Masonary    Three workmen were asked what they were doing. The first one said, "I'm laying bricks." The second man said, "I'm building a wall." The third person said, "I'm building a cathedral."

This frequently-told story powerfully illustrates the power of intention. Meaning and motivation are raised when you lift up your eyes to the light.

Your life energy turns on how you define your work. Tell yourself you are just laying bricks and you are certain to experience burnout. By defining your work as building a cathedral, as sacred work, you enrich your life with hope.

How do you do that? The definition of foolishness, one wise person wrote, is to keep doing the same thing and expect a different outcome. If you want to change your life you have to change your intention first and then your approach.

One leader recently expressed a frustration to me: The instructions to the team were clear and after months of trying the staff was not executing those directions effectively.

This leader was humble enough to admit that a new approach was needed.

The only successful path towards meaningful change starts from within. This is what wise people do. They back away for a time, regain perspective and ask themselves crucial questions: What life patterns are darkening my days? How can I change?

The hardest parts comes next. They are persistence and picking the positive path. You can  complain about what you cannot do or focus on what you can do. The way to fail is to give up.

Is your work a job or a calling? Do you bring your best self to your calling? Are you a disciple of Love?

Stop laying bricks and start building cathedrals.  The path to Love leads to only one outcome: success.

You are right, Erie. It is a mind shift from all about me to all about others. I believe a calling requires that we look first to God and then to others before we consider ourselves; Yet by doing so, we are more blessed than we would ever be through selfish tactics.
Romans 5:5, “And hope does not put us to shame, because God’s love has been poured out into our hearts through the Holy Spirit, who has been given to us.”
Thank you so much for your beautiful reflection!

Working toward the path of light and love makes it simple but also difficult. It is so easy to thing that your path, your goal is unattainable. But, if you make it as simple as light and love, then it is attainable. Thank you for the reminder.

What a wonderful message, Erie. If I am tired it is because I have fallen into the rut of laying bricks. Today I will begin building a cathedral again! Thank you for your words of wisdom and encouragement. We all need to be reminded to recenter our focus on God’s blueprint. His plans are for something exquisite and wonderful. His works build love. Blessings!

If there is to be a change, there has to be a buy in. When there is to be a change from a leader, there is resistance if there is no input from those who do the job. When all see their role in the game(position on the team) and see the vision together on the end result and how it will help the whole team build the cathedral, then they have a great coach who is willing to sacrifice for the team. If the coach helps each member show their strength, then a cathedral is possible. Putting feelings aside and building strength of the special talents of each is always a gift…

    Hi Erie,
Thanks for reminding us of this story and the power of intention. This morning I had a difficult meeting to go to; as I pondered it this weekend I was afraid that I would be asked to do more than possible, and the ramifications of that seem endless…so I decided that I would look at my intentions. That helped. My intentions were to allow my Higher Power to be in control of the outcome, to stay in the moment, and to truly listen and then respond to any requests for my energy at a later date. I prayed on the way in for peace. It turned out that I was asked to be the note taker for the meeting, which kept me in the moment. Leadership asked for opinions and the group came to some consensus, which did not ask for more than I could do, and I was actually recognized for some of my hard work. The importance of patient care was emphasized. The cathedral in my soul felt illuminated, and I think that was possible because of the pause for intentionality.

What resonates with me is in your stunning line, “The only successful path towards meaningful change starts from within.” We can feel powerless to effect change in our world. Yet, so much of what occurs is a reflection of our self-limiting beliefs that distort our perceptions. I am finding it helpful to notice this about myself and just name it. It seems to allow space for curiosity. Persistence really strikes a chord too. Day by day we can move the mountain forward. I loved Stephanie’s example to emphasis intention. I think this is where all flows from, the center of the circle and the heart of all matter. As always, thanks for today’s pearl, Erie and for the insightful comments of readers. :0)

I feel these thoughts need to be in the minds of our leaders. Here we are today, looking at a Congress who has many people gathered together supposedly there to work for the good of all the citizens of our country. Yet they are acting like selfish brats, shutting down the government if they don’t get their way. I wish they could all read this and remember the reason they are elected. Greed and selfishness has gone so far that many of these souls are completely lost in the miasma of it all. I pray they all remember that we are one people, one family and that we are all blessed by God. Then they cannot act with such blind selfishness and greed. They will act from love and wisdom.

Erie: thank you for your encouraging words. “meaning and motivation are raised when you lift up your eyes to the light”. This a quotation from the 7th Verse of the Tao Te Ching a reminder that the Source of Heaven and Earth is eternal. “Serve the needs of others, and all your own needs will be fulfilled. Through selfless action, fulfillment is attained.” The writer us Lao Tze.

Yes, “everyday” jobs all have special meaning in the flow of life.
I’ve helped many a person in my career coaching through the years who have under valued their work as not meaningfull when in reality they were doing God’s work on Planet Earth. For example, one woman told me she had no special skills but that she loved to put together her family’s annual reunion supper at her home. No special skills? She organized the event; planned and cooked the dinner; made everyone feel welcomed; and kept everyone involved in the family! Her gift of hospitality alone pleases God and her family brags about their wonderful reunions.
