What do you need to live your life well & truly? It is courage.

Distant sailboat  Courage & laughter unlock Love's magic.

I like Tennyson's language, "Come now, friends, 'tis not too late to seek a newer world…for my purpose holds/ To sail beyond the sunset/ and the baths/ Of all the western stars, until I die."

It is courage that enables you to sail on when your heart loses hope. Courage enables Love, faith & hope.

It is a lie that winning is the only thing that matters.

When a physician friend died his obituary reported that, “He lost his battle with cancer.” This odd (& frequent) observation suggests my friend was a loser.

Life is not a football game.

If you die of old age can we say you lost your battle with death? If so you & I will lose.

My friend was a caregiver. He did not “lose." His victory came from living love to life's end.

If I die of cancer I hope no one says I “lost” my battle. I will not even have lost my life because I know I have tried – to the point of straining my potential.

Ralph Ellison wrote that the greatest affirmation of humanity is our willingness “to persist in the face of certain defeat.”

To face defeat & never retreat sounds foolish. But, to rest & return to trying expresses life.

This does not always need to be a grim endeavor. Amid the high anxiety of the 1989 Superbowl quarterback Joe Montana faced fear & laughed. With a minute on the clock & his team ninety-two yards from victory Montana came into the huddle & said to his team, "Hey, John Candy is in the stands." His reference to the comedian relaxed his team & led to victory.

Our highest moral imperative is not to succeed but to always try. You have so much more courage than you think.

Try even if you are tired. Try especially if you fail. Try even if you are in pain from trying before. Nurture your strength. Help others.

You can only succeed if you try. You only fail when you give up – when you do nothing, when you ignore someone you could have helped, when you live never using your gifts because you were too fearful (or unmotivated) to try.

Persistence overcomes resistance. I would rather be a “has been” then a “never was.”

Minton Sparks & friends are putting on a conference this summer called "Eat, Paint, Write."(https://www.eatpaintwrite.com) Do all these things with artistic intent.

Help the poor. Try things you are not good at as well as those things where you know you can succeed. If you persist you will always prevail – even if you fail to reach your goal.

Trying offers its own reward – that at the end of your days you can say that you strived – that you lived love to the last syllable of your life.

In that way, you will, "sail beyond the sunset/ and the baths/ Of all the western stars," until you die.

Something that gives me courage is this Journal. Also, to believe that instead of life and death, it’s birth and death, because the consciousness or” the spirit” lives on and on. Change is such a given, I know that by looking my changing face. Every earth that dies is reborn the next year anew. Is Love the ocean that holds these boats afloat in your photograph or is it just water?. Sometimes it’s the courage to hang on, until the dying is over and the birth bleeds through. The courage to feel it all and stay afloat.

I too have trouble with cancer being won or lost. Yes, you must face it with courage, as there is often suffering involved. But, there are blessings, growth of spirit, and strength in what ever form it comes in. So courage is the key to endure what comes. Have faith.

Your reflection today is such a blessing. I think that our society has some wrong ideas about what constitutes courage or what makes a hero. When we hold our heads high and embrace whatever each day brings with hope and faith, we are more than conquerors through God who loves us.

I appreciate the encouragement that you offer, Erie. Thanks too for calling out “the lie that winning is the only thing that matters.” In this world everything seems to be framed in the context of winning or losing so that we have to defend against life and the fear of loss. Yet with Sacred Seeing no one loses; nothing is taken away and everyone gains through Love (making sacrifice unnecessary.) Sometimes being present to life, just as it is, requires courage. One spiritual truth proposes, ” Whatever is lacking in any situation is what I am not giving.” This helps me to look at the situation in a different light.
Teresa’s question is a helpful inquiry. The image of the ocean creates a sense of connection as wind encounters sail and enables the vessels movement. Connection and cooperation; may we help each other along our journey in life in this way. Your image offers a lovely sense of freedom and calm and compliments the earnestness of your inspiration. Thank you for helping us along the way, Erie.

Erie: “Courage enables faith, love and hope”. Am grateful for these encouraging words. Lord Tennyson after he had lost his dear friend who is to marry his sister encourages us in his writing “Ulysses” that life must be fought out till the end. May we be reminded of your uplifting words in our daily lives as we move on in our challenging career or when facing situations in our daily lives. sbeng.

Courage is the caregiver that strives for the dignity of an individuals life and death choices. Courage is seeking Peace, Love and Understanding, when it is painful just to watch 5 minutes of television news. Courage is walking out of your comfort zone and connecting with someone to try and make a different and loving future happen.
The foundations of our world’s religions speak the same language of Peace, Love and Understanding. They also have the courage to come together this year in Salt Lake City, Utah to speak out for one another.

Courage is displayed in oh so many different forms! For one, it is simply being able to get oneself out of bed each morning; dress by oneself with no assistance; for another, a mountain climbed with a disabling injury is another; and yet still different but courageous is, a person who has been shunned for reasons of race, gender, ethnicity, lack of education, physical unattractiveness, a facial scarring, who is always positive and helps others without calling attention to their challenges!
I try to remember, in my relationships with others, that I may only know part of what they are struggling with; and the part I don’t know could be completely disabling to others, but on they go. Their example inspires my soul!
