Florence"Nursing is an art: and if it is to be made an art, it requires an exclusive devotion as hard a preparation as any painter’s or sculptor’s work; for what is the having to do with dead canvas or dead marble, compared with having to do with the living body, the temple of God’s spirit? It is one of the Fine Arts: I had almost said, the finest of Fine Arts." ~Florence Nightingale

There is doubt that Florence considered her work a calling as she was a true healer who touched the lives of many with Radical Loving Care (RLC). She understood the delicate balance between science and art and the importance of human dignity. Her contributions had a profound impact in the advancement of nursing practice. We celebrate nurses during the month in which, she was born as a fond remembrance of her dedication. We would also like to acknowledge all the caregivers who are there for their loved ones day in and day out. We honor you with this prayer written by Jean deBlois, CSJ.

Jesus (God, Giver of Breath), you are the Healer

who calls all nurses to serve and to care for people in your name.

As we carry out this holy ministry, be with us,

bless us with the wisdom of your Holy Spirit and fill us with the compassion

that allows us to put the needs of those we serve before all else.

In the midst of this highly technological and often impersonal age

let us not forget that nursing is fundamentally about being with people in need.

It is about touch … a listening presence … a willing and compassionate heart that sees beyond symptoms and signs of illness

to a person in need and to their community of concern.

Help us to embrace the charism that is nursing … to make it our own    and in so doing to bring your healing presence into the lives of people in need.

In your holy name we pray.

Amen.       ‐Jean deBlois, CSJ

Is there a nurse who has touched your life? Perhaps you a nurse? Who was your role model? Have you reflected on your profession and what gives meaning to the work you do? Maybe you did not go to nursing school but you have learned the art of nursing by caring for someone you love? Share a thought, a word an idea, or the love in your heart….

Liz: thank you for the lovely Prayer written by Jean deBlois,CSJ. I firmly agree with you that nursing is the finest art and it takes time, patience and work to complete it. Day by day as caregivers we are dealing with living beings we are in contact with: body, soul and spirit. How are we going approach the individual and complete the finest art of all? Many times we have to focus on having to manage the needs related to the diagnosis e.g. pain control, wound care etc. I find there are other areas of the individual’s life that needs healing and we can help by having the patience to listen, be supportive and compassionate. To all nurses and caregivers my we honor Florence Nightingale, learn and lead by her example in providing Radical Loving Care. sbeng.

Some synonyms (from WordHippo.com) for the word nurse…
care for, foster, nurture, cradle, feed, keep an eye on, nourish, advance, aid, cherish, cultivate, encourage, father, humor, indulge, pamper, preserve, promote, serve, support, treat, minister to, take charge of, wait on, watch out for, watch over, foster parent, caretaker…Mother.
I have been blessed to be surrounded by nurses for nearly 40 years. I can honestly say I would not be alive if not for the nurses in my life. They have been a foundation for me.
Liz, thank you for bringing to us this poem by Jean deBlois, CSJ. It is truly beautiful to read. But it is more than a poem, it is a Mission Statement we can carry with us all the time.
Thank God for Nurses and Mothers!
    Amen.

The greatest nurse in my life was my mom. She taught me what it means to be present to someone in their suffering. She is the reason I am a nurse and someone who has been drawn towards caring for people at end of life.
    Blessed mother’s Day to all!

Suan, I am grateful for the friendship that we have shared for many years now and it was in nursing that our lives first crossed paths. You have had a long and fascinating career. When I watch the Nurse Midwives show I think of you tooling around in England on your bicycle, delivering babies. Then all those years driving around the neighborhoods caring for people at home. Nursing is such a great profession, we enter into peoples lives and become part of their story. Congratulations on travelling such a beautiful journey.

Thank you, JVD for sharing your kind affirmation and awareness of the impact that nurses have on healing and on your life. I heard a cute quote at a luncheon yesterday, ” Save a life and you are a hero, save 30 and your’s a nurse!”
Yes, I agree Jean’s prayer is a lovely mission statement…
    Amen and hallelujah!

It is such an honor to comfort and to heal as a nurse. My biggest influence was my Mom. She knew how to accept people and show compassion at all times. God has blessed me so often with people who may need healing, but end up teaching me how to love unconditionally, and rise to the occasion of adversity. Thank you Liz, for taking this opportunity to remember our teacher and mentor.

My first job at 16 was at the local nursing home in rural Iowa. Little did I know how much that place and the residence molded me into the person I am today.it was the head nurse Beatrice that encouraged me to go to nursing school as she could see how much I loved taking care of people.helping patients and their families through their illnesses and their acceptance of their diagnosis ishas been my passion and my life journey. Looking back over the past years as a nurse, I reflect on all the encouragement and support of other nurses., remembering their sacrifices a dedication to their patients. I received my cap and pin on Florence Nightengales birthday in 1974. What an honor you reflect to her in Prayer today Liz. Your words are a blessing . I am truly honored to also have been named , Florence Ann.
