Open celebration   Standing atop a hill amid rocks she celebrates life with open arms. That is how we rejoice – by opening ourselves.

You know what this looks like.

Love opens the body. In victory Olympians raise opened arms. A women opens her legs to receive her lover. Mothers open to free their babies into this world. Friends welcome each other with open arms.

The expansive self embraces. This actually nurtures health. The constricted self blocks love, damages health & obstructs healing.

Fear causes us to close, to tighten, to stress our bodies against perceived threats. Crossed arms, clenched fists & gritted teeth all characterize health-damaging anxiety. Fear even blocks the appreciation of high art & deep passion.

Here are the top three ways love promotes health:

   1) Love relaxes the body. Because love is not possessive, lovers treasure presence & do not fear loss. For example, loving parents are grateful for their children & understand that they do not own them.

   2) Love strengthens the immune system. Every scientific study demonstrates this. Romantic lovers are not the only beneficiaries. Love your friends & your pets & feel similar health benefits.

   3) Love gives life meaning. Every caregiver knows this. The act of caregiving opens the heart for healing.

A psychologist friend shared a useful image. "Notice how your body tightens when you are angry or jealous. Your body constricts when you are trying to control. Consider how that eases when you are expansive. You feel better because you are better."

That is what love does. Even when it does not "cure" love always heals.

What a joyful post! We open past our difficulties. We open past our pain. I have to pry open this concrete idea of me in order to do so. Surrender to the open, “I don’t know”. What an important and difficult practice. Thank you so much for the way you watch the world!

I’ve been carrying your reflection with me today, Erie as I move through this day. Noticing my breathing pattern and how taking in a nice deep breath is nourishing and we can release stress with something as simple as an exhale.
Also, the importance of greeting each day with a loving intention; being in the mind of God, so that as M. Williamson encourages (based on ACIM) our hands and feet go forth as messengers of Love.

Erie: Looking back I wonder what gives me the energy to work and thrive as a nurse for so many years of my live. Commitment to duty and love gives me the energy to go on . Love towards the sick and suffering causes me to expand my inner self. I feel better because I am better. I encourage the loving nurses and caregivers to whom you are entrusted to care for to continue to receive them with open arms even through tough times and situations. “Even when it does not “cure” love heals.” sbeng.

Outstretched arms. They open you up to being closer. The fact that you are here today reading Erie’s words means that you have opened up. Do you not feel more relaxed, a bit more strengthened, a bit more cared for?
As Liz says, take this meditation with you each day. And practice its Peace.
Imagine God is next to you. Share your day.

P.S. All 3 make great sense and #1 is especially prescriptive in your acknowledgment that love treasures presence and does not fear loss…also the helpful analogy to our children.
