Life is movementRecently, I was speaking to a colleague about the meaning of her work as a physical therapist and she stated, "I embrace a philosophy that 'Movement is life.'" This idea resonated as I continued to reflect upon this throughout this week.

As I left work that day, I noticed how stress had accumulated in my body. My back ached from sitting too long at the computer. The couch beckoned, "Come, rest a while, put your feet up. Ahhhh….." The longer I laid there the more achy and blah I felt. Yet, on the nights I went to yoga, to stretch and move and work tired muscles, the stress of the day was released. Yoga teaches us to coordinate our poses with the movement of our breath. As we breathe in healing energy we release our stress, anxiety and fears. Afterwards, I felt refreshed, relaxed and grateful that I gifted myself in this way.

Interestingly, we all know the benefits of exercise. As we increase our movement our mood raises, physically we feel stronger and spiritually more grounded. Movement energizes. Conversely, if we succumb to inertia the more tired we feel, our body weakens and we want to be sedentary. It is a tiresome cycle.

When I am in a groove of moving regularly I enjoy the benefits. Then some life events occurs that disrupts the routine. Now I expect it, and I just start moving again, however slowly, as momentum builds.

Friday was the last day at the hub of our healthcare office. Monday we will arrive at a new location to begin a new chapter. It was sweet to see how colleagues took group 'selfies' and made gestures to mark the threshold; the leave taking. I realize how important it is to pause and to acknowledge what has been before moving on to new beginnings.

A team member in our little department offered a personal reflection. Five of us stood in a circle as distractions and sound whirled about us.  Quietly we listened as she spoke of the many prayers that had been offered throughout the years that we spent building our home care ministry. The prayers we prayed for patients, families, friends, and each other. The prayers we prayed for getting through difficult times as well as prayers of thanksgiving. Then she read a beautiful passage from psalms and concluded with a prayer of blessings. It was affirming, reverent and honoring of all the people that had poured their hearts and souls into their daily work. We all hugged and the movement began again. We continued packing and readied ourselves to move forward.

Movement is life.

The only constant in healthcare is change.
    From Bhagavad-Gita…
“Freedom from activity is never achieved by abstaining from action.
    Let him who would climb
    In meditation
    To heights of the highest
    Union with Brahman
    Take for his path
    The Yoga of action;
    Then when he nears
    The height of oneness
His acts will fall from him,
    His path will be tranquil.”
Yoga is good, but sometimes a full body massage is helpful, too.
A toast to new beginnings and fond memories.

Thank you for this reminder, Liz. I have been traveling so much these last few weeks for school that my body is aching for movement. Best of luck to you and the team at the new office location.

How beautifully integrated Liz. Life when balanced, rounded, filled with meaning, blessings abound, life is liberated and freedom is expressed. You have captured that energy, colour and vibrancy in your mandala. May the physical movement that is occurring in your life at the moment gift you with renewed hope, joy and fulfilment. Good luck and thank you.

Like all you write, Liz, this is very beautiful. I so agree with you–a flow of movement in daily living is conducive to to not only accomplishing more tasks, but also to maintaining a balance of negative and positive energies. And so when “disruptions” occur, the “blow” is less upsetting to that balance. And yes, movement (mental/physical/spiritual) is a necessity to living, which comes from moving with the flow of where He wants us to be, as well as growing with the inevitable changes we experience. There is so much beauty in it. We can step back for a moment and be mindful (a small bit of rest amongst many daily activities), and see all that has happened, a product of our tenacity to keep going, as well as His will. Thank you for all the beautiful reminders, Liz! ❤

Liz: what an interesting article about movement both in your physical life and the practical things all of you have to do in co-ordination with one to practically move from one office to another. What is so sweet is with one accord is all of you prayed and it was affirming, reverent and honoring all the people that had worked tirelessly and the many years all of you spent in building the home care ministry. May God Bless all of you in your new location as continue to provide Radical Loving care to the community. God Bless.

At first when I saw Liz’s illustration, it reminded me of chaos. Yet she was talking about saying goodbye and letting go of a building that framed an everlasting friendship of memories. Still the pioneer after all these years. The pioneer takes good paths and not so good paths along their journey. Continue that pioneering effort as you embark onto a new settlement to plant your spirit.

    Angelica,
Thank you for the beautiful thoughts that you have shared. Yes, it helps to keep and open mind and heart to the movement of Spirit in our lives, where will you have me go, what will you have me say and to whom to fulfill your purpose, oh Lord.
