International Caregiver Day 8 26 2015“There is a light in this world, a healing spirit more powerful than any darkness we may encounter. We sometimes lose sight of this force when there is suffering and too much pain. Then suddenly, the spirit will emerge through the lives of ordinary people who hear a call and answer in extraordinary ways.” ~Mother Teresa

August 26th is the day Mother Teresa was born and what better way to honor her memory this week, than to celebrate the contributions of loving caregivers from around the world.

Take a moment think about all the people you encounter each day, your family, friends, and colleagues or kindnesses of people you may not even know.

Gestures of caring in small and big ways; but when offered with love, each are meaningful and equally precious.

Share a word, thought, an affirmation, a prayer of gratitude whether spoken aloud or in the silence of your heart.

We administer medications to relieve pain, we clean the wounds and gently secure them with a bandage. We perform these tasks to many others routinely as part of our job day in and day out. What joy we experience when the wounds finally heals. May we realize that our spirit of caring and our patience helps not only to heal the physical being of the individual we care for but also impart love and lifts their suffering soul. God bless the nurses and those who administer comfort and care. We thank Mother Teresa for such a loving heart and setting such an example. Thank you Liz for your spirit of caring spirit too.

An old man walks by a busy intersection and a teen sees him, stops traffic for the gentleman to cross. After the man gets across he disappears into the crowd but the teen hears, “Thank you.”
Early one morning a woman is driving to work. Caught in unexpected traffic she has time to glance around and spots a cat on the side of the road. It has been injured but is still alive. Though she is late she gets out and gently picks the cat up and takes it to a nearby animal hospital. Getting back in her car she drives by the spot where she found the cat and hears, “Thank you.”
A couple of kids are playing in the woods near their favorite watering hole. Someone was there overnight and made a mess of the place. They could walk away but love this place so much that they get some trash bags and remove the litter and groom the grass and water the flowers. The sun is high in the sky by now which tells them to head for home. As they turn to take their leave of this spot, a breeze rustles through the trees. “Thank you” is what they heard.
A caregiver. A saint or an angel. Or an enlightenment. It begins first with a moment.

Liz, may you and all who read the Journal this week feel the loving arms of God embracing and encouraging you. May all those who give of themselves in care for others be enriched through the energising nature of love that when poured out returns to refresh and revitalise the giver. Thank you Luz.

Thank you Maureen, we all benefit from encouragement and Love’s outpouring. Yes, may we find renewal and new found energy in the days when we grow weary and in need of rest. And may these blessings return to you Maureen, tenfold!

JVD,I love the illustrations that you have shared of situations when people have chosen to not just walk by out to put love into action. I think of the 3 American’s who put their own lives on the line to help save people they had never met from being killed. Whether a small or large gesture there is no order in importance of miracles and love. Yes, moment to moment we can choose again and when we stumble and are lost in the mist, there is an outreached hand ever ready to takes ours and affirm the truth of what we are in Love.

Suan, so often what matters to the people who receive our care is never documented in a clinical note. Yet, these are the things that people never forget. The way in which we treated them and how we give care says so much more that our technical care. All the small gestures that show reverence and respect. Gentle ways of being that say, I see the light in you and it is beautiful.
In gratitude for your contributions and to living a lifetime of loving service, Suan.
