“I'm so glad I live in a world where there are Octobers.”
― L.M. MontgomeryAnne of Green Gables

Fall 2015 Lisa Gayle

Fall is a favorite time of year for many.   On a breeze they waltzed, they danced, they fluttered before parachuting down to Mother Earth.  Sun creates a momentary luminary that casts shadows beneath her skin.

Nature gifts us with intricate designs. For those of us living in a warm climate, seasonal changes are subtle. As daylight hours wane and temperatures cool, we may resist change  or discover  Grace in our surrender; for every ending is a beginning.

Fall 2009

A Blade of Grass

Said a blade of grass to an autumn leaf, “You make such a noise falling! You scatter all my winter dreams.”

Said the leaf indignant, “Low-born and low-dwelling! Songless, peevish thing! You live not in the upper air and you cannot tell the sound of singing.”

Then the autumn leaf lay down upon the earth and slept. And when spring came she waked again — and she was a blade of grass.

And when it was autumn and her winter sleep was upon her, and above her through all the air the leaves were falling, she muttered to herself, “O these autumn leaves! They make such a noise! They scatter all my winter dreams.”

“Nature gifts us with intricate designs”! For those with eyes to see the world is a blaze with colours of God’s love, creativity, delight, wonder, endless beauty. Thank you Liz for alerting us to take notice and feel the change in the seasons as we move into Spring in the southern hemisphere.

Love the pictures. Just went through Utah and saw the change of colors for myself. The green leaves dancing in the wind with the brown, yellow, orange and red brother and sister trees. Framed with the blue skies kissed by billowing clouds…time had no meaning there.
Really like the Gibran poem, reminds us to be kind to those on the way up, the fall will be gentle.
Also, may we always be in a state of metamorphosis and grow a bit each day like a tree, not afraid to change with the seasons of knowledge.
(I guess i like fall, too. our cats are named Autumn and Winter.)
“The falling leaves drift by my window
The falling leaves of red and gold
I see your lips, the summer kisses
The sunburned hands I used to hold
Since you went away the days grow long
And soon I’ll hear old winter’s song
But I miss you most of all, my darling
When autumn leaves start to fall
Since you went away the days grow long
And soon I’ll hear old winter’s song
But I miss you most of all, my darling
When autumn leaves start to fall
I miss you most of all, my darling
When autumn leaves start to fall”

You honor and celebrate autumn with such beautiful and encouraging words, Liz. You also bring your niece’s photographs even more alive with these words: “On a breeze they waltzed, they danced, they fluttered before parachuting down to Mother Earth. Sun creates a momentary luminary that casts shadows beneath her skin.” So the breeze is not just the breeze but a shifting platform where leaves dance and flutter on their final flight. The leaf is more than a leaf but a luminary. Thank you
I wish October were a fine month that can be celebrated by all. For one relative of mine it harkens his darkest time. The day after the end of October marks the clock’s change in most parts of the country. He notes it on his calendar because he knows his depression is likely to intensify on that day and he wants to engage his best energy to fend it off.
People who love autumn’s sweaters and the trite repetition of how “crisp” it is have the hardest time appreciating how difficult the fall is for so many suffering from SAD & clinical depression.
Perhaps, this season more will open their hearts with compassion for these folks instead of insensitive lawyer’s arguments for why they should be happy instead of broken-hearted.
It does harm to tell a depressed person they have no reason to be depressed. They know that and the knowledge that they cannot summon joy becomes all the more discouraging.
Thank you again for offering a way to celebrate this season, Liz.

Thank you for the depth and sincerity of your response, Erie and for raising our awareness about SAD and clinical depression. It seems one of the greatest gifts we can offer another person (and ourselves) is acceptance. So often I catch myself wanting to banish unwanted feelings…and chastising myself for feeling a certain way and thinking I should feel differently than I do. When what I really need is acknowledgement of what is and a listening heart to what arises… without judgement.
