Advent wreathThe season of Advent has roots that date back to northern Europe in pre Christian times. In the cold dark of winter candles were lit upon an evergreen wreath to mark the time, while each day people eagerly awaited the return of sun’s warming light.

In the 1500’s Christian’s adopted this beautiful custom in anticipation of the birth of the Christ child as a radiant Light of Love sent to help heal our broken world. Advent precedes the Christmas season and begins on the Sunday closest to November 30, the feast day of St. Andrew the Apostle.

The circular shape of the Advent wreath symbolizes a Love that has no end and no beginning. Four candles, (3 purple & one rose colored) set on the Advent wreath signify our hearts' yearning with hope, peace, joy, and love. As we light the candles to reflect and share in prayer we deepen our preparation for the epiphany of the Christmas miracle to come.  Each week an additional candle is lit and a fifth white candle, within the center of the wreath, is lit on Christmas Eve.

The mystery of the Advent season is filled with surprises if we are patient and open to receive the gifts that are all around us. Today I received a blessing from a colleague and dear friend. She stopped by and invited me to join with her in reading today's Advent prayer and  reflection. Afterwards we shared the meaning it held for us as well as connections to how we are living our lives.  In open receptivity Grace transforms our hearts to see anew.

Blessing When the World is Ending

Look, the world
is always ending
somewhere.

Somewhere
the sun has come
crashing down.

Somewhere
it has gone
completely dark.

Somewhere
it has ended
with the gun
the knife
the fist.

Somewhere
it has ended
with the slammed door
the shattered hope.

Somewhere
it has ended
with the utter quiet
that follows the news
from the phone
the television
the hospital room.

Somewhere
it has ended
with a tenderness
that will break
your heart.

But, listen,
this blessing means
to be anything
but morose.
It has not come
to cause despair.

It is simply here
because there is nothing
a blessing
is better suited for
than an ending,
nothing that cries out more
for a blessing
than when a world
is falling apart.

This blessing
will not fix you
will not mend you
will not give you
false comfort;
it will not talk to you
about one door opening
when another one closes.

It will simply
sit itself beside you
among the shards
and gently turn your face
toward the direction
from which the light
will come,
gathering itself
about you
as the world begins
again.

The Advent season and tradition of lighting the candles helps us to pause in reverence and  acknowledge the sacredness of all life. In this way we prepare our hearts to be gently turned in the direction of light.

Whether or not you are of a particular faith or religious affiliation, may you discover the beauty of this Advent season and embrace the never ending mystery of Love's unfolding in our lives.

“In open receptivity Grace transforms our hearts to see anew.” How encouraging Liz and how much today do we need to see anew, particularly for the people in your part of the world who are grieving and bewildered by such senseless loss of life in the San Bernardio tragedy. May those who are suffering experience the Light that dispels the darkness through the attentive and caring presence of other Bearers of Light. Thanks Liz as each of us strives to be a blessing to others.

Liz: thank you for such a timely word when so many received word of the loss of their dear ones in the recent tragic event in San Bernardino, a place where people work to help those that are in need of help. I am glad at this time Advent is here. There is Blessing in time of chaos. “It will simply sit itself beside you. Among the shads and gently turning your face toward the direction from which the light will come, gathering itself about you as the world begins again. Our prayers goes to those who are experiencing the loss of their dear ones and may the Lord strengthen their inner man at this time of grief.

Dear Maureen, thank you for your prayers for the families and co-workers who experienced this most recent tragedy. It effects us all. I was thinking of all the people who are suffering when I wrote this. Yes, let us do our best to be a blessing to others… you are truly a Bearer of Light, Maureen.

In Reality, the world ends every time we fall asleep… and we are reborn to a new day, never before seen and never to be seen again.
A tradition we do each year at the beginning of Christmastime is to go see the Trans-Siberian Orchestra. The event gets us in the mood for Christmas. This year was now going to be different. Just a few days and a few miles from the events at the Inland Regional Center in San Bernardino, CA. A Christmas concert so close yet so far… It became a blessing to those that attended. To be reborn in the Love and transported in time together. To remember to live love, not fear.
    And it snowed inside, too!
Thank you, Liz, for the poem by Jan Richardson.

What a gorgeous Advent gift, Liz. It is embarrassing for me to admit that I was unfamiliar with the Advent candles. As as child, Advent was always the excitement of the windowed calendar of days. As an adult, it was the preparation for Christ’s birth. Thank you for adding the candles to my appreciation.
The poem by Jan Richardson is transformative:
    gently turn your face
    toward the direction
    from which the light
    will come,
And await the celebration of the birth of love and hope.

    …and with our every breath.
What a wonderful Christmas tradition, Jolyon. Sounds magical.
Yes so many families reeling from the effects of such senseless devastation…lets keep them close in our prayers and all who are suffering.

Thank you, Erie, yes I loved the advent calendars! The wreath and lighting of candles is something I discovered as an adult. I find it meaningful to share in the Advent prayers and taking a few moments to pause and affirm that Love is in our midst…regardless of our circumstance.
