As Christmas draws near, we prepare our hearts to celebrate the birth of Christ; of Love in our midst.

No one can deny that this is a busy time of year. Ah, the twinkling lights, and Christmas Carols, the fun of decorating gingerbread houses and the most magical tradition of setting a live tree in the center of one’s home. We pull out dusty ornament boxes to adorn her branches. Nostalgia builds as we carefully unwrap each trinket that holds a memory of its own. A baby’s first Christmas, handmade treasures, some antique from our grandparent’s parents and a few new gifting’s with each passing year.  The enjoyment of gatherings with special friends, family dinners, and the excitement of dressing in our holiday finest for the parties, shopping for that distinctive gift and all the special efforts that go into to spreading some cheer.

Yet, beneath all the flurry of activities lies the poignancy of life’s fleeting nature. Living in this awareness we need to make space for all of life; joy and sorrows, fullness and loss, for loved ones present and for those we are missing, for our many gifts and for less fortunate times, for peace and the turmoil. In this way we appreciate the present moment with renewed gratefulness.

Let us approach each other with the reverence of an open mind and heart and with sensitivity that this season is not all about cheer as much as it is about inviting in and welcoming all that is with love.

Sending Christmas blessings to you; may you experience a peace that surpasses all understanding.

Liz, what a magnificent mandala – absolutely exquisite. The words of your greeting match the beauty of the mandala. They remind me of an article written by Ronald Rolheiser OMI, Christmas, A Time to Rise Above Gloom. In his concluding paragraph he writes, “It is not the person who says: “It’s all rotten, let’s cancel it!” who radiates hope. At the end of the day, that’s despair masquerading as faith. No. It’s the woman or man, who, despite the world’s misuse and abuse of these, strings up the Christmas lights, trims the tree and turkey, pours gifts and drinks all around, turns up the stereo which is playing the carols and flashes a smile for the whole world, who radiates faith, who says that we are meant for more than gloom.” May Christmas gift you and our world with deep peace.

Liz: I love you quote from Lao Tzu. Peace starts first in the home, neighbors, cities, nations and the world. May we all enjoy this Christmas with Christ as the very expression of Love and Peace imparting Himself to each one of us. “Joy to the world the Lord is come”. Thank you for your mandala – the beautiful artistic expression of Love during this festive season. Merry Christmas to you and all in your household and may all the joy and blessings be upon everyone.

Such a beautiful mandala and words of praise. Thank you, Liz.
Yesterday at church we were celebrating Mass of the Fourth Sunday of Advent. The priest also asked us to slow down and think about the traditions, the memories, the meanings of the season and why we celebrate. During much of the mass, many parishioners were watching and enjoying two little girls playing with ornaments they had brought from a Christmas tree. Watching them brought a truer meaning to the homily by the priest. So much so that at the end of the mass, as the procession was leaving the alter, the priest slowed down to talk with the girls and bless them personally.
    Christmas Blessings to all!

Lao Tzu should have started with “There must be peace in the heart”. After that everything else works itself out.
