Dawn of a new day

Blessing for the End of the Year
By John O’Donohue

As this year draws to its end,
We give thanks for the gifts it brought
And how they became inlaid within
Where neither time nor tide can touch them.

The days when the veil lifted
And the soul could see delight;

 When a quiver caressed the heart
In the sheer exuberance of being here.

 Surprises that came awake
In forgotten corners of old fields
Where expectation seemed to have quenched.

 The slow, brooding times
When all was awkward
And the wave in the mind
Pierced every sore with salt.

 The darkened days that stopped
The confidence of the dawn.

 Days when beloved faces shone brighter
With light from beyond themselves;
And from the granite of some secret sorrow
A stream of buried tears loosened.

We bless this year for all we learned,
For all we loved and lost
And for the quiet way it brought us
Nearer to our invisible destination.

    After the year you have had I am sure that you are glad to say goodbye to 2015. But as this poem so eloquently states, there are ups and downs, valleys and rivers, frowns then smiles. This poem is the best answer to the question “What is the year 2015?”
    The sun setting in Guatemala takes one back to a peaceful place of spirituality.

    Funny that you say that, Jolyon because I don not feel any sense of misgivings but rather a deep sense of gratitude. Yes, life is not an either or but a both and… we need to make space of the peaks and valleys because God/Love is in all of it.
    Thanks for commenting, much appreciated… O’Donahue give voice to what remains unspoken in our hearts.

    The passing year to me had it’s high points and it’s lows. Both had to do with my sons. I guess one never stops being a parent.
    Let us all hope for a good new year.
