Light of your soulShared by Liz Wessel:
"FRIENDSHIP is a mirror to presence and a testament to forgiveness.”

“Friendship not only helps us see ourselves through another’s eyes, but can be sustained over the years only with someone who has repeatedly forgiven us for our trespasses as we must find it in ourselves to forgive.”

“A friend knows our difficulties and shadows and remains in sight, a companion to our vulnerabilities more than our triumphs, when we are under the strange illusion we do not need them.”

“An undercurrent of real friendship is a blessing exactly because its elemental form is rediscovered again and again through understanding and mercy.”

“Friendships of any length are based on a continued, mutual forgiveness. Without tolerance and mercy all friendships die.” -David Whyte

David Whyte’s thoughts on friendship resonate because they give voice to a deeper truth. The circular energy of our relationships, the ebb and flow of love, tenderness and vulnerability helps to dismantle the layer upon layer of a false self; the persona that we have painstakingly cultivated through time.

In this second half of life we have an opportunity to shed our old skin in a regenerative way. Our friends are the cherished beings who see beyond our faults to our true essence, as brilliant as the northern star.

May the light of your soul guide you.
May the light of your soul bless the work
You do with the secret love and warmth of your heart.
May you see in what you do the beauty of your own soul.
May the sacredness of your work bring healing, light and renewal to those
Who work with you and to those who see and receive your work.
May your work never weary you.
May it release within you wellsprings of refreshment, inspiration and excitement.
May you be present in what you do.
May you never become lost in the bland absences.
May the day never burden you.
May dawn find you awake and alert, approaching your new day with dreams,
Possibilities and promises.
May evening find you gracious and fulfilled.
May you go into the night blessed, sheltered and protected.
May your soul calm, console and renew you. -John O'Donohue

The white circle in your drawing, Liz, captivates me, drawing me inward or maybe encircling me in a way that embraces the truth of me in acceptance and love. In that truth it is my real self that is revealed. Thank you for these reassuring and challenging words Liz. May you too be blessed with friends who see your true essence and reflect your goodness back to you.

Yesterday I went to a celebration for a monk that just turned 94. Today he gave an hour long talk on Divinity and the presence of God within. Tomorrow his new book gets released, “Learning Listening Loving.” I came across a Hallmark card yesterday that says “Chairs are always good to have so friends can sit beside you.” To sit beside this man that calls me a friend, to sit next to Liz and share a story. Friendship is honey to the soul. Sweet and nourishing (And a great antidote to the common cold, sorry chicken soup lovers. The monk is a vegetarian.), a gift from nature and mother. Sit close and hear the hum of the bees. Sit close and feel the hum of Mother Nature. And be a friend to her…
Friendship: Like Linus and his blanket, Snoopy and Charlie Brown. Learning Listening Loving. Being there…

I love the way you wrote this from the beauty of your own soul, Liz! Here comes the gift of friendship to be treasured each day and nigh. As Jolyon says so well, “Friendship is honey to the soul.
As you write, “The circular energy of our relationships, the ebb and flow of love, tenderness and vulnerability helps to dismantle the layer upon layer of a false self; the persona that we have painstakingly cultivated through time.” And is not it incredibly difficult to accomplish this? It seems that only our truest friends can hold a place for us (and we for them) that is safe enough for us to shed that skin and offer our most naked truth.

Also, I’d like to offer a separate comment about your magnificent drawing. You engage not only your skill and heart in this but I love the way your piece appears as a pencil or charcoal sketch so that the words are actually in color instead of the the drawing beneath. What a powerful idea!
Each week I imagine you working away to create the best artwork you can offer to all of us. Thank you so much for that, Liz.

This is such a loving sharing, Jolyon and a testament to friendship. Thanks for offering a chair to us, to sit and enjoy your friendship. Wonderful chicken soup analogy and connection to befriending Mother Nature. The monastery is such a beautiful place to feel close to her.
