“Sooner or later, just by living, we are reduced to what matters, as so many things we thought were important and irreplaceable are broken or snapped like small branches in a storm. And somehow, we stand taller with less coverings. It is then we begin to feel gratitude, even though it's hard to be grateful for what is difficult. In this regard, all poems are expressions of truth and gratitude.”

I Bow to All

I keep telling strangers that
to be in the presence of those
with whom you can both share
pain and celebrate just waking
is the answer to loneliness.

Such friendship makes the shar-
ing of pizza in a noisy pub and the
standing in silence as the old oak
creaks all one could ask for.

In truth, this process of being
worn to only what is raw and
essential never ends.

It's as if a great bird lives inside
the stone of our days and since
no sculptor can free it, it has to
wait for the elements to wear us
down until it's free to fly.

A Question to Walk With: Describe a part of you that seems to be in mid-birth, a wing of being half-carved, and name one experience that is chiseling you free.

In these days when we’re called in a different and maybe challenging way to live from our heart space, once again you touch us Liz with an invitation to go deeper, to ponder creatively and to trust. This weekend we are saddened by an inspiring community and church member who died unexpectedly from a stroke. Her love was extraordinary, especially in the way she embraced crosses, reached out to those in need, spoke up for the poor, lived her faith with courage and conviction. She has been described as a living saint. Indeed we are enriched because of her – doing the ordinary, everyday activities with extraordinary love and faith. May your day be enriched, Liz.

Thank you for sharing in this community, Maureen. I am so sorry for your loss and that of your community. It seems she served her purpose her on earth, lived a life of love, Love in action and she leaves a beautiful legacy. I have no doubt that love will continue to live within your community and inspire others to follow in her footsteps. She lives a legacy that we all strive for and she will be deeply missed a testimony to how deeply she has loved and is loved.
My sincere condolences to you, your community and to her family in your time of deep grief.

Well written post once again! What is left: “raw and essential” is our soul and our spirit we showed in living our life fully and for others to the greatest extent possible.
Each new adventure and each experience further shapes our soul and our “holy” countenance”. We become a closer image of God and what good we achieve sends out ripples of caring and love down through the ages of our descendants’ lives and beyond to that home in the Heavens, realizing that our true Heaven is probably right before our eyes right now, here on planet Earth!

“Sooner or later, just by living, we are reduced to what matters…”
First time I read this I left out the word “what” and read “we are reduced to matter”. Ashes to ashes, dust to dust…is where my mind wandered. I then saw Maureens’ reply and I wondered if I subconsciously read ahead. Maureen, your tribute to your friend gave me the image of Christ. I read that her life followed the words, deeds and footsteps of Jesus. Our days will be enriched knowing how she points a way to Truth and Love.
    Amen

    Hello Liz!
So sorry to be late responding! This is magnificent and very healing, as is your lovely watercolor.

So many of us feel “work to only what is raw…” & have trouble accepting that it will never end, “essential” or not. Therein lies the true heart of spirituality & belief in God’s Love

I know you have been busy… 🙂 (The image is of my late parent’s home in Vermont.)
Yes, the work is never done and we may never see the fruits of our labor but we lay the stones, build a foundation as those did who came before us…and we persevere, when things get torn apart we rebuild…
Thanks for your blessed insight, Erie, “Therein lies the true heart of spirituality & belief in God’s Love.”
