“So that is the dissenter’s hope: that they are writing not for today but for tomorrow.”

Hope for the future

HOPE

by Lisel Mueller

It hovers in dark corners
before the lights are turned on,
it shakes sleep from its eyes
and drops from mushroom gills,
it explodes in the starry heads
of dandelions turned sages,
it sticks to the wings of green angels
that sail from the tops of maples.

It sprouts in each occluded eye
of the many-eyed potato,
it lives in each earthworm segment
surviving cruelty,
it is the motion that runs
from the eyes to the tail of a dog,
it is the mouth that inflates the lungs
of the child that has just been born.

It is the singular gift
we cannot destroy in ourselves,
the argument that refutes death,
the genius that invents the future,
all we know of God.

It is the serum which makes us swear
not to betray one another;
it is in this poem, trying to speak.

More than ever our world needs Hope – are we not called to be beacons of Hope? May we live in such away that others will be encouraged and be convinced that there is ‘more’ to life than the difficulties of the present, believing that Love will overcome. Thank you Liz for gifting us with Hope today.

“It is in this poem, trying to speak”. It is also in this post which conveys the diversity of hope and of our natural world! We are but a small but significant part of this universe; it is in our power to positively affect others by our actions and prayers. “It refutes death” and urges us to live each day as fully as is possible for us in our unique situations here on Planet Earth. Make that your goal!

Hope in these political times is watching the movies:
Dave ~ “I ought to care more about you than I do about me… I ought to care more about what’s right than I do about what’s popular.”
The American President ~ “How do you have patience for people who claim they love America, but clearly can’t stand Americans?”
V for Vendetta ~ “God is in the rain”
    Words matter:
FDR ~ “…the only thing we have to fear is fear itself.”
    MLK ~ “I have a dream.”
RBG ~ “Fight for the things that you care about, but do it in a way that will lead others to join you.”
