Seedlings

If any of the short sentences that follow appeals to you, place it in your heart and ponder on its inner meaning. This will cause its inner truth to germinate and grow

Seedlings by Anthony De Mello

Do not force it open with your mind.
That would only kill the seed.

Sow it where the soil is rich. Sow it in your
heart.
And give it time.

You do not
have
to change
For God
t
o love
you.

Be grateful
for your sins.
They are carriers
of grace.

Say good-bye
to golden yesterdays
-or your heart
will never learn
to love
the present.

Seedlings come to fruition as we well know. Remembering the words of Hafiz, “The words you speak become the house you live in” reminds me to sow seeds of love, compassion and hope not only for myself but for all those who share the journey with me. In that way the houses in which we dwell will be content and peace-filled. Thank you Liz and thank you too Anthony.

Each of these sentences offer an invitation to linger and to discover some new insight. What resonates for me, is the seedling that I am loved…connotes a love and acceptance and a deeper reality of what we are…Love…intellectually and spiritually I understand this and find great comfort in this awareness. To fully embrace this into every cell of my body and mind, however, requires faith, trust and surrender.
“Be grateful for your sins, they are carriers of grace” is a reversal of thought that touches my heart. As I reflect on times when I have missed the mark, the grace of forgiveness is healing. How can I learn to receive the gift? Self forgiveness is necessary if we are to forgive others. Healing occurs in relationship and is reciprocal in nature.

I like Anthony de Mello’s writings as he wrote about simple truths. “If it is peace you want, seek to change yourself, not other people.” Or “Silence is not the absence of sound, but the absence of self.”
Yes, we are seedlings ready to shed are shells and grow. Nurture us with a rain of wisdom. Feed us with Your Devotion. We breathe in and exhale as we follow Your Light. Take away the weeds that want to overpower us. Surround us with the clarity of Your Love.
Thank you Liz and Erie. You are helping us all to let go and grow.

    The most startling verse is:
    Be grateful
    for your sins.
    They are carriers
    of grace.
Although I understand, it is difficult to connect sin with gratitude and that is why De Mello’s poem is so powerfu.
