Famous

The river is famous to the fish.

The loud voice is famous to silence,

which knew it would inherit the earth

before anybody said so.

The cat sleeping on the fence is famous to the birds

watching him from the birdhouse.

The tear is famous, briefly, to the cheek.

The idea you carry close to your bosom

is famous to your bosom.

The boot is famous to the earth,

more famous than the dress shoe,

which is famous only to floors.

The bent photograph is famous to the one who carries it

and not at all famous to the one who is pictured.

I want to be famous to shuffling men

who smile while crossing streets,

sticky children in grocery lines,

famous as the one who smiled back.

I want to be famous in the way a pulley is famous,

or a buttonhole, not because it did anything spectacular,

but because it never forgot what it could do.

Reflection: In what way do you want to be famous?

May it be for gentleness, a gentleness that is wrapped in compassion!

To answer the questions I think I would like to be ‘famous’ to the bees. Feeding them water. Tending to their flowers. Giving them shade during the hot summer months. And remembering that they give us life…
Beautiful picture of Starling and Chase.
    Thank you for sharing, Liz.

What a completely beautiful and lovely way to frame this ancient question. Thank you for bringing this to us, Liz. And thank you for sharing the gorgeous image of two beings to whom YOU are famous: Starling and Chase. I suppose we are supposed to say “I don’t want to be FAMOUS for anything” because seeking fame is vain. That’s why I like thinking of leaving a legacy not of doing anything spectacular but for pouring every ounce of my being into doing the best I could do.
