Garden of My Heart.3Summer solstice is here with the sun setting at 7:42 PST. The longer days beckon us outdoors to enjoy the beauty the natural world offers us.

Recently retired, I find myself drawn to my neglected backyard to trim the overgrown ivy strangling some plants and wrapping around the lemon tree. I am pulling weeds and planting flowers and carefully nurturing them. Previously, I’ve not been one to garden as pulling weeds gets discouraging when they just keep returning. However, now that I have newfound time, I am finding digging in the earth a peaceful experience that lifts my spirits and is grounding, (no pun intended, ha!).

Getting outdoors, I am feeling motivated by a vision to create a little oasis of sorts and I am slowing working to manifest a sacred space to enjoy. Ah, to sit under the shade of a tree, listen to birdsong, and feel a warm breeze on my face, maybe read a book or delight in idle conversation. A former colleague and a great mentor to many, comes to mind offering her sage wisdom, “remember Liz, don’t squander your summer!”

As I transitioned from a fulfilling career of 47 years in healthcare, there was an initial sadness that endings can bring. I have crossed the threshold of a changing landscape that is encouraging me to savor little moments and to appreciate the precious gift of each new day. We get to create our own personal masterpiece. Life is asking something of me, beckoning me to let go of enticing distractions of technology and to come home to my inner sanctuary.

Wishing you a splendid summer and remember… don’t squander your summer!

How beautiful, Liz. Thank you. Your artwork takes me to the Beauty of Monet as well as the Beauty within yourself.
The oasis you create will be a sanctuary of delight, wonder and joy for all who inhabit the space.
And for us down under may we embrace the giftedness of winter.

    Retired. Nope. A volunteer.
    You say so yourself.
You are still a grandma and help raise them.
Bottle washer. Gardener. Grocery shopper. Essayist. Artist. A documentarian of Seasons. A person learning to let go…enjoying the now.

In the top 5 of all the many essays you have written for our dear Journal, Liz, up to an including your quiet watercolor: “Garden of My Heart.” Thank you. So much insight in here including the sentence that begins: “I have crossed the threshold of a changing landscape that is encouraging me to savor…” And as I read that I wondered what would come next. “Savor” what? Your answer highlights the center of God’s gifts which, I believe, we only begin to experience “in silence.” You dig into the earth and, in your quieter state of retirement THAT becomes “a peaceful experience.” God, of course, is in the details, and everywhere else. How do we “see” God. You have shown us…(Meanwhile, I love the way Maureen reminds us that SHE and her compatriots are immersed in cold and only someone of her grace can describe that season as a gift.

Thanks so very much Erie for your life affirming response and astute reflection on my reflection. I so appreciate you! BTW, I will always be grateful to you for taking a chance on me and giving me the opportunity to contribute reflections here on the JSW. It has been such a blessed experience through these many years. Just thisnk of all the memories that we have cultivated in tending this garden of RLC. Thank you, my dear friend!
