Light of Love 2013The scene opens with a young boy lying sick  in bed. His grandfather
is reminiscing with him about his life and childhood. He recalls his own father
reading to him when he was 10 and ill with pneumonia.

It is a story that has been
passed on through the generations. In fact, it became the grandfather's all-time favorite story.
He opens the worn torn book cover of “The Princess Bride” and cleverly engages
his grandson as this imaginative story unfolds.

This epic tale is a
light hearted adventure of a quest for true love  entwined amid the forces of
good and evil.

Years later, actor Mandy Patinkin reminisces about a famous line in the film. As he looks back,  he discovers, and reveals  a remarkable insight. Listen to this 1.5 min video by clicking on the link below.

Recently, I visited my precious mom. She shared some snippets of her childhood remembrances, which I was able to capture on video. What stories give meaning to your life, you know, the favorite ones that you wish to relive and tell, again and again?

It is said that when you seek revenge
first dig two graves, one is for you.
Paying back or getting even with
someone is a good way of loosing your
    soul.

So, so true, Liz. Aren’t we blessed in the many ways we move from darkness to Light. Favourite stories for me take me back to family holidays at the beach, working together during harvest time and as a family praying together after our evening meal, ‘tea’, and of course visiting my Nana.

If you watch the entire film carefully you will see why “The Princess Bride” is a classic. It was fascinating to listen to Patinkin describe how not until twenty-six years after he spoke his line about revenge did he realize how powerful it was. This is why I campaign so hard for people to watch classic films (and books and poems and paintings) again and again. If it is great art you will always discover something new. And the experience will be new because you are not the same person who saw the film previously. Thank you, Liz.

What poignant food for thought, Liz! I suppose that is why Alexander Pope said, “To err is human, to forgive is divine!”
Of course, my favorite stories are happy memories with my family, but as the holidays approach I bring out some of my favorite old movies that tell timeless stories. One is called “Come to the Stable” about a group of French nuns who establish a hospital on faith. The other is called “The Bishop’s Wife” and tells the story of one man’s struggle to rediscover his faith. I watch them every year because they continue to teach and encourage me in a way that brings great joy.
