H reaching out 2    Do you ever feel that you have understood some things better before they were explained? Learning how my hands functioned & looked in x-rays distanced me from the mysteries of touch.

Fine photographs can help restore our sense of the spiritual magic in our hands. Hands, like eyes, can heal.

Here are four images. They have back stories. The rest of what these images awaken in you is up to your open heart.

The first image (above) was taken by a CBS news photographer. One hand reaches out to many & vice versa. The hand reaching out is Hillary Clinton's. Why does she reach our? Why do they want to touch her hand?

Caregivers over patientThis second picture was made by an anonymous military photographer in a battlefield hospital. These hands reach out to help one tiny person. If you click on the image you can see what the baby's hands are doing.

Ec left hand  This picture shows my left hand photographed using my right. It rests amid pages of Radical Loving Care. Were I blind & this book in Braille I might be reading with my fingers. In either case this hand reaches for words.

WW 2 VetThis last picture was also taken by an unnamed military photographer as part of a Defense Department competition. To me it is the "best" because any further words might steal from your personal understanding.

In important ways, each of these hands are yours. Thank you for the healing your hands offer each day.

This is one of those essays that takes me into the depths of my heart where only soft images arise, like my life flashing across my mind. A place without words.

This is such a compassionate essay, Erie. As I sent your reflection out to friends via email this morning and typed each persons name, I thought of the way their hands bring light and healing to our world it was a beautiful & powerful re-frame. Jean, pottery; Laura, English gardens; Suan birthing babies; Brenda, photography; Sisters, healing touch; Jolyon, writing poetry,Gilda, massage therapy; nursing colleagues, easing suffering; artists, expressions; Chris, sign language; Phil, hair stylist, Woody, making teeth; and….
Your closing thought is such a radically loving affirmation, “In important ways, each of these hands are yours. Thank you for the healing your hands offer each day.” one that helps me to remember our interconnectedness with all beings and what matters in life. Yours is a precious gift, thank you.

What a lovely way to honor and extend this idea to your friends, Liz. I love the way you have named them by their hands which in turn names their heart. Thank you and happy birthday week!

Erie, an excellent photo essay to reflect on. The images do not need words to describe what is happening, but the words add clarity. My first thoughts were of how to respond to pictures with my words. It then flipped into words that are pictures. We see these images from the words we hear. Strangely enough the first image (words) that jumped forward were “See no evil, hear no evil, speak no evil.” Next I thought, what images of hands ‘spoke’ to me this past year or so.
Holding a loved ones hands as they released towards Gods’ embrace.
The statues of handcarts pulled from Iowa to Utah.
The Interfaith show of hands in Salt Lake City.
The sculptors hands, the artists hands. The dancer holding their partner close.
The interlocking of families of a wedding reception.
    A warm greeting.
    A simple prayer.
