"The surest way for evil to succeed is for good people to do nothing." – Attributed to Edmund Burke, 1770

Internment camp cartoon 6   Four centuries before Edmund Burke, Aleghieri Dante, author of the masterpiece, The Divine Comedy stated the concept more harshly, "The hottest places in Hell are reserved for those who in time of great moral crises maintain their neutrality."

Last week I departed from the usual Journal approach to write how Donald Trump's views clash with Radical Loving Care. I also described his opinions as inconsistent with Christianity.

Why does this relate to Christianity & the sacred work of caregivers? Because Trump's example emboldens the worst leaders in healthcare & elsewhere. Because hate-mongers like Trump threaten the whole concept of loving care for all – including Muslims & Hispanics, legal or not. Because degrading people with disabilities is an insult also to those who treat people with disabilities lovingly rather than (as in times past) with derision.

When I was a kid the only fights I got into were with other children who mocked my sister's disability. For the past forty years I have fought for the concept that loving leaders should take care of the people who take care of people, that love is the highest power. Everyone says they agree.

So why would some of these same people support any leader who expresses hate? What are we to do when a leader degrades Hispanics & Vietnam POWs, who insults every one who disagrees with him, who proposes banning 1.5 billion people only because they are Muslim & who makes derogatory comments about women?

Cartoonists, along with thousands of other responsible commentators, have struggled to warn us. My best friend, attorney & author Bill Banta, is guiding a course on the Trump issue at his Presbyterian church in an effort to create further dialogue on this subject in a Christian context.

But many good people have decided that the right response is…nothing. They sit silent or, worse, fail to learn the facts needed for an informed position. Others rationalize Trump's racist & misogynist comments by saying, "The country has gotten so PC you can't say anything." or "he didn't mean that." or, most commonly, "I like that he speaks his mind."

Yes. He speaks his mind. But, what comes out of his mouth when he does?

Political correctness calls for respect not censorship & insults. Jesus taught that "God is love." Trump implies that God is money & winning is all that matters.

Trump's success fuels every bullying boss in America. His message to leaders is that you win using intimidation (his book, The Art of the Deal), deceit (Trump University), slight of hand & other tricks con-men use every day.

Sadly, many hate groups including the Ku Klux Klan, the racist American Freedom Party and the Council of Conservative Citizens (which, according to CNN, "is widely considered to be white supremacist") have rushed to support Trump.

What harm can hate speech cause? The Trump-endorsing American Freedom Party, again according to CNN, "inspired Dylan Roof, who last summer confessed to shooting and killing nine people at the Emanuel African Methodist Church in Charleston, South Carolina."

Donald Trump has been slow to decline support from some of these hate groups. CNN reported that "he initially refused to disavow former Ku Klux Klan grand wizard David Duke" and claimed that he really did not know who Duke & his supporters were.

In the face of Trump's hate speech why have so many American's voted for him? It is baffling, deeply discouraging & a core reason why I, as a Christian minister & healthcare leader, speak out against his demagoguery.

If Trump says Muslims & hispanic immigrants should not be allowed in America will some caregivers think these same people do not deserve medical care? Is this the America Trump wants to "make great again," to take us back to a time like the 1950s when hundreds of doctors, nurses & hospitals refused to treat black people?

Advocates of hate anywhere are threats to loving care everywhere.

We can argue Donald Trump is "not as bad" as the other choices. We can also sit in silence every time someone tells us they support this demagogue.

Or we can decide that love calls us to action not acquiescence, to understanding but not to tolerance of such fear-mongering.  We can ask, "Which leaders appeal to our highest & best self?" and, "Who appeals to the worst in us?

This is not a call to hate Trump & his supporters. This is an appeal to live the tougher side of love, the side that called Jesus to attack the money lenders in the temple & inspired his disciples to speak out against bigotry toward Christians.

For America to be a temple of God's peace & tolerance we need only turn our eyes & our votes toward love instead of away from it, toward open arms instead of closed fists.

In a way, the British have faced this choice & 52% of them opted for isolation. Interestingly, after their vote to leave the European Union hundreds of thousands who supported the "Brexit" watched the collapse of their currency in horror. "We didn't know it would mean that," these short-sighted people say now. They failed to pay attention & now they are paying the price.

I am always haunted by the language of Lutheran pastor Martin Niemoeller during World War II. His words speak to the best & worst in each of us & call us to speak up:

"In Germany they came first for the Communists, and I didn't speak up because I wasn't a Communist. Then they came for the Jews, and I didn't speak up because I wasn't a Jew. Then they came for the trade unionists, and I didn't speak up because I wasn't a trade unionist. Then they came for the Catholics, and I didn't speak up because I was a Protestant. Then they came for me, and by that time no one was left to speak up."

More than ever, where we live we need the voices of all good people. We have witnessed the aftermath of Brexit in England, Australia faces Federal Election this weekend and there are people in the States who believe in Trump. Where is the Gospel being preached? Is it up to us?

Important piece of writing! Well Done! Yes Trump represents an unfortunately larger background of anger, fear, and hate, which has been growing in Americans for a long time. There are many causes: poverty, ignorance, lack of education, and yes relative lack of career opportunities, especially for under educated Americans of all backgrounds.
What to do? Speak out to hate as a solution to these larger problems in our society! Speak out to lack of legislation on everything from guns to jobs to improving our US infrastructure, to continuing to improve health access for millions, to providing more physical education and arts funding for our public schools. This will help but we all know that the real solution is to be found only in the caring heart that sees unjust situations and tries mightily to rectify them, slowly but persistently, over time. We will overcome!

This is such an important public conversation. Today’s journal is the clearest arguement I’ve seen written on the subject. I tend to stay on the fringes of politics but am inspired to print this and share with family and friends who are blindly voting against Hillary. Thank you!

I had lived and worked in England in the early sixties and seventies. The situation there were peaceful. I enjoyed caring for the patients and shared the gospel with them and also with my colleagues. Recently I was very touched with the people’s choice regarding “Brexit” and result it had on them today. May God’s hands guide them through these hard times. As He watches over US during this election may His Spirit brood over the people of this land to fulfil His plan for this country. “In God We Trust”. God Bless America!

The following insights shared by Joan Chittister, OSB resonate and are aligned with your heart rendering and stirring message, Erie.
The great leaders of history have always been those who refused to barter their ideals for the sake of their personal interests and who rebelled against the lies of their times.
Real leaders don’t live to get to the top of a system. They live to save the soul of it and they will go on doing that whether they are elected or not.
“As long as the world shall last there will be wrongs, Clarence Darrow warns us. “And if no leader objects and no leader rebels, those wrongs will last forever.”
To save the age we must choose leaders who will rebel–rebel against the violence, rebel against anyone or anything that leads us to believe that either self service or force can save us now.
We must choose leaders who inspire us to rebel so that what obstructs us from being fully human together may be seen for what it is, be converted into good, and become the sweet voice of justice heard in every corner of the world. We must choose leaders who will lead us back to our best selves. -Joan Chisttister
Erie, thank you, for being a leader who is calling “us back to our best selves” and inspiring us take a stand at this critical time in our history.

Hi Erie: You asked me today on FB to read your commentary here and express what I thought because I said HRC is as bad as Trump. I cannot disagree with you about what you say about Mr. Trump here, but I also see a different type of danger in HRC that is just as distressing to me. HRC may be the “lesser” of the two, but both are serving a function for the masses in that we are awakened to what we no longer want or will tolerate in the leaders of this country. After some contemplation, I feel I want to express my opinion within a broader context.
First, stand in your peace no matter what is going on in the world. What is happening with the politics and the world is a reflection of an aspect of the collection consciousness. The political turmoil and characters in it all show us what needs to be healed in our world and within each of us.
DT reflects the aspects of hatred, greed, bigotry, intolerance and uncaring of the human condition. HRC reflects the aspects dishonesty, greed, power, fraud, deceit and misuse of power for personal gain. Each in their own way reflect back to us what needs to be healed in our society and wake us up to change. We see that huge desire for change within the powerful movement that Bernie Sanders has started and pushes us to be our best.
As we stand in our peace, we stay in alignment with our source, which empowers ourselves to manifest the world we want to live in, and eventually we see that the collective consciousness changes it’s direction. We can look back over the years and see that happening as humanity raises its consciousness.
We each must look into our hearts and decide how we want to choose. These are my thoughts from within my own little world. I share them because you asked. Love, peace, and integrity always ~ Maria

Thank you for sharing your point of view here, Maria. I appreciate you taking the time to write it out. Even though you have offered the conclusion that Secretary Clinton is in the same category as Donald Trump with respect to integrity that conclusion does not comport with the facts. Trump is abusive, insulting, supportive of a wide range of torture and a blatant bully. There is ample evidence to support this.
Secretary Clinton is a somewhat conventional politician in the same mold as Obama. She has been attacked repeatedly back to the Whitewater case and has ultimately been found innocent in ever case. Yet her lack of Bill Clinton-type charm results in her continuing to attract negative reviews because of her personality. For example, she was attacked repeatedly regarding Benghazi yet neither the Republican led Congressional Committee nor the State Department have been able to conclude that there was anything wrong with her personal handling of this. Just as with email, this is no more than an unintentional mistake at most and lacks any of the criminal intent involved in, for example, Trump University. She also lacks any of the barbarianism represented by Trump’s widely racist comments.
Most of all, Trump is anathema to the whole concept of loving care represented in the Journal and, whereas Clinton completely supports the concepts we advance and with which I know you agree.
Your passion for Senator Sanders is clear, Maria. But Sanders himself, a wonderful leader and campaigner, now supports Hillary. Does this have any influence on you?
Hope you will listen to him but I am worried your mind may be closed on this. If so, your point of view can lead to exactly what Senators Sanders himself does NOT want – a Trump victory. Indeed, look to your heart. Peace and love to you and thanks again for sharing your view.
